“I was driving home from work on I-75 and started detecting a strong smell of gasoline. I pulled over and inspected the vehicle. I found that the fuel line had rusted and was spraying gas everywhere. Upon further inspection, I found that all the lines for the fuel and brake system were severely rusted and will need to be replaced to avoid catastrophic failure that could result in serious injuries to myself and others on the highway. I have researched and found that there have been thousands of complaints filed, but no action taken. …”
NHTSA complaint #10767587, filed 2015-09, 150,000 miles“While having my vehicle check over for the winter, the mechanic inform me that the front brake lines are very rusty as well as the fuel lines and the cooling lines going to the transmission. This situation is very disturbing since I have very low mileage. The tubing used for the brake as well as the fuel lines should be able to withstand rusting for the life of the vehicle. If the material used by GM was not up to specification as far as corrosion protection either compensation to repair it is in order a recall should be made.”
NHTSA complaint #10734179, filed 2014-12, 44,300 miles“A brake line burst underneath the truck when I applied the brakes with substantial pressure (not enough to engage ABS on the dry pavement). Was able to swerve to avoid vehicle that cut us off and use emergency brake to slow/stop vehicle in a safe place. All brake lines were severely rusted/corroded and needed to be replaced. Fuel lines were replaced as well at the same time, due to severe corrosion.”
NHTSA complaint #10417450, filed 2011-08, 77,636 miles“Fuel line corrosion resulting in multiple leaks in pressurized fuel line. Fuel dripped continuously onto the transmission, including some electrical connections, as well as onto the exhaust system, clearly representing a fire hazard. When problem first started, gasoline vapor was noticeable in the cabin. 2003 Gmc sierra 2wd ext cab fuel line assembly was replace by local mechanic ~$640 parts and labor.”
NHTSA complaint #10364102, filed 2010-11, 100,000 miles“Check engine light investigated, and cause found to be loss of fuel tank pressure due to rotted out fuel filler neck. Original part made of non-corrosion resistant steel. Other corrosion problems with this vehicle have involved brake lines. The first line was replaced in 2007, when the vehicle was only 4 years old. A more extensive replacement of corroded lines was done in 2008 or 2009. These are serious safety and emissions related problems, and these vehicles should be recalled as a result of them. Owners who have paid for repairs in the past should be compensated by a reasonable amount.”
