Example complaints

Selected from NHTSA records; personal details are removed. They are consumer reports, not findings.

“During cold mornings (wisconsin) I start my truck and I have no power steering and soft brakes. It is my understanding that the power steering runs the brake boost. Also, it is my understanding that there is a service bulletin that says that the power steering fluid should be replaced with low/cold temp fluid. My concern is what happens if I lose power steering and brakes while I am driving.”

NHTSA complaint #11297098, filed 2020-01, 158,500 miles

“Intermediate shaft continues to rattle. Was fixed under warranty once. Vehicle is now out of warranty and cost $110 to lube the shaft, which isn't even guaranteed to fix the problem. Many people have this problem with their trucks over and over. Gm needs to handle the problem correctly.”

NHTSA complaint #10163761, filed 2006-07, 35,000 miles

“Clunking noise in steering components when turning the vehicle with suspension movement (crown of road, un-level surface). Clunking felt in the steering wheel. Dealer stated, intermediate steering shaft problem. Many like reported problems to dealer and on the internet.”

NHTSA complaint #10181309, filed 2007-02, 12,000 miles

“Dt: the contact stated when applying brake pressure at 5 MPH or less there was a loss of power steering. When brake pressure was released, the power steering returned. He took the vehicle to the dealer, who stated the same pump activated the power steering and the power assist brakes;. He replaced a valve on the pump. The problem persisted, and he returned to the dealer. The dealer performed a diagnostic test that produced normal codes. There was technical service bulletin pit3310 , and the contact felt this was related to the ongoing problem. No further repairs have been made.”

NHTSA complaint #10145909, filed 2005-12, 2,500 miles

“Steering linkage problems: I've had the same problem since I've owned my truck. My father, who also has a 2500hd, has the same problems as well. They lubed and greased the shaft at one point under warranty, but the problem has returned and is persistent in both of our trucks. Both of our trucks are '04 models and I have less than 40k miles on mine. It feels like the steering wheel will come unattached from the linkage. Not a very safe problem to have. I hope someone will take these complaints seriously.”
