“My 8 year old child became locked in the seatbelt, the seatbelt would not unbuckle nor release tension, it kept getting tighter and tighter and he tried to get out when it then tightened around his diaphragm and chest making it very hard to take a breath. I had to pull over and ask a store for tools to try and release it but it kept getting tighter and he was panicking. I had three other children in the car and could not take the time to get help without potentially having him go into respiratory arrest. I had to cut the seat belt. …”
NHTSA complaint #11737388, filed 2026-05“Over the summer when our Honda odyssey was only a couple months old (we had bought it brand new) my 7 year old son ended up with the seatbelt in the back passenger seat wrapped around his neck! He was playing with the seatbelt and somehow got it around his neck. I was driving and his siblings told me what was happening. I of course quickly pulled over into a parking lot and I couldn’t believe how tight it was wrapped around his neck in such a short period of time! As I was trying to loosen it it just kept getting tighter and tighter. …”
NHTSA complaint #11576348, filed 2024-03“We purchased a brand new Honda Odyssey and when driving my 7 year old son began playing with the seatbelt. The seatbelt became wrapped around his neck and went into locked position so it couldn’t be loosened. I thankfully was near a restaurant so was able to get scissors from them and had to cut the seatbelt off my sons neck to free him! It was terrifying that I couldn’t release the belt from his neck and I’m lucky I was able to get scissors to free him! The seatbelt should not automatically lock if retracted all the way! There should be a release button! …”
