Example complaints

Selected from NHTSA records; personal details are removed. They are consumer reports, not findings.

“I am writing to formally report and complain about a serious safety issue I am experiencing with my Honda Odyssey related to the Auto Idle Stop feature. While the vehicle is stopped and Auto Idle Stop is engaged, the engine unexpectedly shuts down and, in some cases, does not restart properly when I attempt to accelerate. This has occurred after normal driving and also immediately after refueling. When the issue happens, the vehicle loses power completely for several seconds, creating a dangerous situation—especially in traffic, at intersections, or while making turns. …”

NHTSA complaint #11708863, filed 2026-01

“The vehicle suffered an Auto Idle Stop failure at a red light. The engine shut down normally, but failed to automatically restart when the brake was released. There were no dashboard warning lights, and I was forced to manually shift the vehicle into Park to restart the engine in active traffic.”

NHTSA complaint #11762202, filed 2026-09

“The contact owned a 2024 Honda Odyssey. The contact stated that while sitting in the vehicle with the engine idling on an extremely hot day, he smelled gasoline fumes on the interior of the vehicle. No warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who diagnosed a failure with the cabin ventilation system, allowing fuel vapor into the interior of the vehicle. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 7,000.”

NHTSA complaint #11594931, filed 2024-06, 7,000 miles

“The vehicle was stopped at a red light. This vehicle is equipped with an auto-start/stop system to save fuel. Once the red light turned green the engine refused to restart. This was the second instance. The vehicle took over 30 seconds before it would restart. None of the push-to-start buttons worked, the car would not recognize that the brake was pressed, and it had also shifted itself into park. Very dangerous while traffic was moving all around us.”
