“I have a 2017 Sonata with 93000 miles, the paint on the roof, directly above the windshield has started to peel off all the way to bare metal. At first it was about one inch chips that were peeling away. Recently after a hard rain a large chunk of paint came off. I have seen other sonatas with the same problem. All of the cars that I've seen with this problem are white in color.”

“After 1.5 years and 15,000 miles, the latch of the trunk door went broken and the trunk cannot be opened in any way. I took it to the dealer to replace the trunk last. I was told this is a common issue on these vehicles due to the fact that Hyundai uses plastic instead of metal latch.”

NHTSA complaint #11324340, filed 2020-05, 15,000 miles

“On november 23, 2019 I started my car and proceeded to back out of my drive way. My power steering locked, the light came on along with my traction control light. I had to force my steering wheel to turn my car back into my driveway to get it off the roadway. I turned my car off, and back on and lights disappeared and I had control again. A few weeks later, driving down the road my steering got tight and fought my car to get it home. I got it towed to the dealership. They told me the whole power steering column had to be replaced. …”

NHTSA complaint #11292536, filed 2020-01, 76,000 miles

“While driving to work on 2.8.2019, my sunroof violently exploded. I was on interstate 10 in phoenix, az at approximately 5:40 am. No vehicles were in front or beside me. The exterior temperature was below 40 degrees, the heater was on in the car. While driving at approximately 67 miles per hour, down a straight stretch of the highway, I heard a loud bang. The car did not swerve. Inside the car I could now hear more road noise. I opened the sunroof shade enough to slip my fingers through and felt cold air and broken glass.”

NHTSA complaint #11175827, filed 2019-02, 53,900 miles

“While driving on interstate 70 in ohio my sharkfin blew off. I was going around 75 MPH. No vehicle was in front of me. I heard a very loud noise which lasted a few seconds. Within 10 miles I stopped my car a service station and discovered my plastic shark fin cover had blown off. Nothing hit the car. No blood, no scratches. When I reported it to the dealership they said I must have taken it through a car wash. I have had 3 sonatas and have never taken one through a car wash. When I first got to the dealership the receptionist at the service dept. …”
