“I have a 2014 Hyundai Sonata. The panoramic sunroof exploded while I was driving. After trying to find a repair shop I seen that it is actually happening to all models with the panoramic roof from Hyundai. Is anyone else aware of this? What will Hyundai do about this? Is it even safe to drive?”
NHTSA complaint #11023499, filed 2017-09, 62,141 miles“I was driving on the highway (about 65 miles per hour) on a smooth road and then all of the sudden I hear a loud popping sound and then I hear air coming through my sunroof. I stopped and got out of the vehicle and noticed the majority of around the edge glass on the sunroof was gone and residual cracked pieces of glass (tempered glass pieces) remained around the edges. I noticed that when the glass came off it hit the rear trunk and scrapped the paint on the trunk.”
NHTSA complaint #11151694, filed 2018-11, 123,000 miles“While driving 65 on the freeway I heard a loud pop sound..I thought it was a gun shot or tire exploding, then I noticed the sunroof sounded open so I hit the close button & nothing, so I opened it to try to re-close & once open I noticed the sunroof glass had shattered and the glass was falling on me, cutting my arms and face, glass everywhere in my car, getting in my fingers while trying to get it off me. Glass flying off the roof onto cars behind me. Very dangerous. I see many other people have had the same problem. And yet still no recall!!”
NHTSA complaint #11320310, filed 2020-04, 130,000 miles“On june 15, 2018, my car caught fire while driving down interstate 70, near greenville, illinois. There was no warning, just a noise similar to a loose piece of plastic. Black smoke billowed from behind the vehicle, and as I attempted to pull over, the engine shut down. Once we were on the side of the road, the fire was visible from under the engine. We contacted 911. The car is a total loss. This car had various recalls, all deemed 'resolved' by Hyundai. They did extend the warranty due to the known issues. I have reached out to them daily and have not heard back.”
NHTSA complaint #11103420, filed 2018-06, 70,000 miles“1) the miles per gallon reading is unpredictable its advertised to give around 27 combined but I have never reached that 27 mpg, though I drive in low RPM ) the vehicle does not slow down for long distance even after releasing the gas pedal resulting in abrupt braking in lieu of gradual braking in stop & go traffic 2) the drivers side seat malfunctioned at around 15,000 miles 3) the car has a leak from 1000 miles onwards but the service center refuses to help, I called Hyundai they advise me to call the service center, I feel as if after a valuable investment there's no customer satisfaction…”
