“While driving at interstate speeds the accelerator stops working. There is a mild popping sensation and the gas pedal no longer has any effect. The car continues to run, but slows down naturally and will eventually slow to about 10mph. If you turn the vehicle off and restart it, it runs normally until the next time it randomly does this at 70mph. I have only had it happen on the interstate while going about 70mph. It is not like going into neutral... The engine does not respond to the gas pedal at all... Not revving... Nothing. …”

NHTSA complaint #10965768, filed 2017-03, 112,500 miles

“The contact owns a 2010 Kia Sedona. While the vehicle was operated, it experienced unintended acceleration after the brake pedal was depressed. As a result, the vehicle crashed into a tree. The failure occurred without warning. A police report was not filed and there were no injuries. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic and repaired. Months later, the failure recurred. The contact shifted gears and the engine revved. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 90,000. Updated 10/28/16”

NHTSA complaint #10894765, filed 2016-08, 90,000 miles

“The contact owned a 2010 Kia Sedona. While driving 65 MPH, the vehicle suddenly accelerated without warning while the cruise control was engaged. The brake pedal was depressed, but failed to stop the vehicle. In addition, the emergency brakes failed. The contact was able to stop the vehicle by turning the ignition off and removing the key. Upon exiting the vehicle, a bystander was running towards the vehicle with a fire extinguisher. The contact noticed flames under the front end of the vehicle. The fire was finally extinguished by the fire department. There were no injuries. …”
