What owners report

Owners of this model year most often report glass problems — windshields that crack from a small chip or from no visible impact at all, and panoramic sunroof panels that shatter while driving. A second cluster involves instrument cluster and infotainment displays going blank or freezing, typically at moderate mileage and several weeks to years into ownership. Engine oil loss (through the filter housing or by consumption) and complaints of stalling round out the picture, and several reported failures correspond to recalls issued for this vehicle.

Windshield cracks from small chips or with no impact

    • 99 complaints (30%)
    • median 37,000 mi at 3.2 yrs old (1 states mileage, few)
    • filed 2021–2026

Owners describe windshields developing long cracks that begin at the lower driver or passenger corner, sometimes after a small stone hit and sometimes while the vehicle was parked or being driven on a clear road. Several report a hairline crack spreading into the driver's line of sight within a day, and some had replacement windshields crack again shortly after installation. Complaints state that dealers attributed the damage to outside impact and declined warranty coverage. Reported across a wide mileage range, from a few thousand miles up to roughly 30,000 miles, often within the first couple of years of ownership and without an obvious impact.

What to check: Inspect the windshield closely for chips, repaired spots or crack lines starting at the lower corners, and ask whether the glass has been replaced. Note that glass damage is usually handled outside warranty, so a pre-purchase inspection of the windshield is worthwhile.

2 excerpts from owner complaints in NHTSA records

“I just recently bought a 2022 Kia Telluride 7 days ago and while driving on the freeway the windshield shattered in the lower corner of driver side. There was no car in front of me (not a close distance) or near me for that matter and there was no overpass for a rock to have fallen from. My windshield shattered and glass landed in my face, eyes, and mouth, and all over the inside of my car. Luckily I was able to maintain some control as there were no other vehicles in close proximity. …”

    NHTSA complaint #11432080, filed 2021-09

“I have a 2022 Telluride I purchased from the dealer in May/22 and after 3 months the windshield cracked starting from the bottom corner of driver side almost across the entire windshield. The crack happened while the car was parked in the garage overnight, I found later a small chip maybe caused by a pebble. I did some reasearch online and this same problem has been reported multiple times on Kia forums. I talked to the dealer and they said this is not covered by manufacturing warranty.”

  2. Electrical system

Blank or frozen instrument cluster and infotainment screen

    • 38 complaints (12%)
    • median 49,500 mi at 1.4 yrs old (4 state mileage, few)
    • filed 2021–2026

Owners report the digital gauge display freezing on a speed or going completely blank, sometimes while driving, and staying dark until the vehicle is shut off and restarted. Others describe the infotainment screen going black and the backup camera working only intermittently, with dealers diagnosing a failed cluster or head unit and quoting replacement. Some complaints note that the dealer could not reproduce the problem during a service visit. Reported from as low as a few thousand miles up to around 80,000 miles, frequently described as intermittent and recurring over months.

Recall 22V344000Recall 21V5770001 related service bulletin

What to check: Start the vehicle and confirm the instrument cluster and center screen illuminate and respond, then cycle through the menus and the backup camera. Ask whether either unit has been replaced and whether the infotainment software update has been applied.

2 excerpts from owner complaints in NHTSA records

“The gauge center behind the steering wheel will freeze every couple of weeks and will stay frozen until the car is shut off. After a few hours I can turn the car back on and it will work correctly. The speedometer analogue gauge will work but the digital screen will freeze. For instance, yesterday it was frozen on 23 MPH and I was in park! The issue this causes is that I cannot use the cruise control, change the display to view other info, the blind spot cameras don't work, or any other info displayed there. I have video and pics.”

    NHTSA complaint #11539066, filed 2023-08

“Blank instrument cluster same as NHTSA Campaign # 22V344000. This issue started happening about 2 weeks ago and has happened approximately 5 times so far.”

    NHTSA complaint #11491414, filed 2022-10
  3. Engine

Engine oil leaks and excessive oil consumption

    • 36 complaints (11%)
    • median 36,800 mi at 2.8 yrs old (6 state mileage, few)
    • 4 mention a crash, fire or injury
    • filed 2022–2026

Owners describe oil leaking from a cracked oil filter housing, in some cases draining enough oil to leave the engine low, and others report needing to add oil between changes. Complaints mention rough running, loss of power, stalling and check-engine lights when oil level drops, and at least one owner reported a piston failure with fire. Some say the dealer replaced the filter housing; others report the problem was not covered as expected. Reported from roughly 12,000 miles up to about 95,000 miles, with several complaints noting low oil shortly after an oil change.

    14 related service bulletins

What to check: Check the oil level and look for a fuel or burnt smell, and inspect under the hood and beneath the vehicle for oil residue around the filter housing. Ask whether the oil filter housing gasket warranty extension (WTY045) or any oil consumption diagnosis has been performed.

2 excerpts from owner complaints in NHTSA records

“The oil filter housing cracked on the car, causing all the oil to leak out. In researching this, I have found that this is a common problem with the Kia Telluride and Kia Sorrento. The problem is that the oil filter housing is made of cheap plastic and not durable material such as aluminum or steel. This allows the oil filter housing to easily crack under stress. In speaking with the dealership, this is not an uncommon problem. I feel that this should be covered under the Powertrain warranty or through a recall. …”

    NHTSA complaint #11709092, filed 2026-01

“I am the original owner of a 2022 Kia Telluride. Since approximately late September/early October 2025, the vehicle has experienced an intermittent engine stalling condition while stopped and idling. I first reported the issue to my Kia dealership on October 8, 2025, when the vehicle had approximately 59,761 miles. At that time, I advised the dealership the engine had already stalled twice within two weeks. I also sent a photo of the warning lights and suggested they allow the vehicle to idle to recreate the condition. …”

  4. Visibility (wipers, defrost, mirrors)

Panoramic sunroof glass shatters while driving

    • 45 complaints (14%)
    • median 29,089 mi at 3.9 yrs old (2 state mileage, few)
    • filed 2021–2026

Owners describe a loud bang resembling a gunshot followed by the panoramic sunroof glass breaking and blowing outward, usually at highway speed with no object seen striking the roof. Many note the sunshade was closed, which kept glass out of the cabin. Complaints say dealers taped or covered the opening pending repair, and in some cases warranty coverage was declined. Mostly reported on vehicles in the first few years of use, from around 12,000 to 37,000 miles, and often at highway speeds.

    5 related service bulletins

What to check: Open and close the sunroof and look for chips, cracks or uneven panel alignment along the glass edges, and ask whether any sunroof glass or wind deflector work has been done. A warranty extension campaign (WTY049) covers front sunroof wind deflector repairs on certain vehicles, so it is worth asking whether it applies.

2 excerpts from owner complaints in NHTSA records

“Sunroof spontaneously exploded while driving on the highway at around 65 mph. Fortunately, the shade underneath it was closed so the glass did not get in my car and fortunately, my children were not with me.”

    NHTSA complaint #11454971, filed 2022-03

“I am reporting a spontaneous sunroof glass failure involving my 2022 Kia Telluride. While driving at normal highway speed, I suddenly heard an extremely loud bang that sounded like an explosion or gunshot. I did not see or hear any object strike my vehicle before the incident. After safely pulling over, I discovered that the panoramic sunroof glass had shattered. The glass appeared to have blown upward and outward from the vehicle, and by the time I stopped, most of the glass was already gone. …”

  5. Transmission and drivetrain

Vehicle rolls or creeps when parked

    • 17 complaints (5%)
    • median 37,950 mi at 2.8 yrs old (6 state mileage, few)
    • 3 mention a crash, fire or injury
    • filed 2021–2026

Owners report the vehicle moving on its own after being shifted into park and the driver exiting, in some cases rolling into a garage door or another parked vehicle. A few describe the vehicle jerking forward or accelerating unexpectedly while idling or after releasing the brake. Complaints state that some vehicles had the driveshaft-related recall performed or were told the vehicle behaved as designed. Reported from roughly 12,000 to 46,000 miles, typically in driveway or parking situations rather than at speed.

    Recall 24V2140004 related service bulletins

What to check: Ask whether the driveshaft engagement recall (24V214) has been completed, and confirm the parking brake holds the vehicle on a slope. Also have any 4WD coupler noise or vibration software update checked.

The contact stated that after his wife had parked the vehicle and left the front driver's side door opened while there were two passengers in the rear seats. The contact stated that his wife unloaded the vehicle and walked towards the front door. The contact's mother-in-law and daughter who were in the residence noticed that the vehicle was rolling back and alerted the contact's wife, who turned around and ran after the vehicle. …”

During the failure the front and rear driver's side doors and residence were damaged. The cause of the failure was not determined. The contact was informed of the NHTSA Campaign Number: 24V214000 (Power Train). The contact stated that the vehicle had experienced the failure listed in the recall. …”

Buying note. This model year draws repeated complaints about glass — windshields cracking and sunroof panels shattering — plus intermittent screen failures and oil loss, so inspect the glass and electronics closely and ask for recall history. Confirming that the open recalls and the engine and sunroof warranty extension campaigns have been applied gives a clearer picture of what remains outstanding.

Summary written with AI from a sample of 60 NHTSA complaints for this model year (picked at random, with complaints that state a mileage and recent ones taken first), then checked automatically against the source records. Where a problem shows a complaint count, every complaint for this model year was matched with fixed keyword rules (written with AI and tested against the sample), and the mileage, age and repair figures are calculated from those complaints; owners' figures are as stated, not verified. Other counts refer to the sample. The excerpts come from NHTSA's public complaint records and are unverified; capitalisation is normalised, NHTSA staff notes are removed, and shortened text ends with “…”. Something wrong? Example complaints

Visibility (wipers, defrost, mirrors): “I had noticed a 1 wide crack had formed in the center of the windshield after first night of cold weather (~10°F). There was no prior damage to the windshield before the crack formed. I'm concerned that the crack will continue to spread as we progress into the winter in the upper Midwest, ultimately shattering while I'm driving.”

NHTSA complaint #11706066, filed 2025-12

Other or unknown: “Engine rapidly burning oil. Had oil changed as Manufacturer's recommendation, but after exceeding the 100,000 mile warranty and having been 7,000 miles since the last oil change the engine threw a rod and the car stopped while i was driving it. Was told by the Kia Dealer (Fitzgerald Kia in Annapolis) that I needed a $10,000 engine replaced. I am currently working with a lawyer to address this concern.”

NHTSA complaint #11748854, filed 2026-07

Electrical system: “The dashboard display went blank while driving down the highway. I could not see my speed, fuel level, or and engine performance indicator lights. I called Kia and found there was a recall for this problem but NOT FOR MY VIN. Well, I have the same dangerous issue as those included in the recall, so I think my vehicle should be recalled immediately. Thank you.”

NHTSA complaint #11587034, filed 2024-05

Engine: “The vigils when turning left or right makes a grumbling sound from the rear or transmission. Took the car to Kia in Huntsville. Al and they keep saying they don’t hear anything. You can clearly hear it. I have video recording. Seem like they don’t want to cover what is broken. It could possibly be the transmission case/ coupler because it’s an AWD. Next I will be filing a law suite.”
