“Timing chain stretched and variable valve timing, and throttle went out. This is the 2nd time that the timing chain has been stretched out on this vehicle. The first incident was at around 64000 miles. The 2nd incident was at 124966 miles. Mazda extended the warranty on the timing to 70,000 miles on january 12. However, I did not get that letter and it happened after I had already gotten the problem repaired under a separate warranty.”

NHTSA complaint #10569086, filed 2014-03, 124,966 miles

“The timing chain tensioners & bearings that keep the chain tight wear out way before their life should be up. I took the car to the Mazda dealership to have it looked at & the shop technicians said they get this problem with these cars all the time. All they had to do was listen when the car was started & they knew exactly what the problem was. Even before going in I called & spoke to a service tech. As soon as I said my car sounds like a diesel vehicle he said over the phone that the problem was with the timing chain tensioners and such. …”

NHTSA complaint #11021175, filed 2017-09, 106,000 miles

“This vehicle has caused me nothing but problems! I have had it for 3 years and it has been in the shop 4 times and this last time is the transmission at 70,000 miles! This is ridiculous...Mazda needs to clean up it's act. Customers should not have charges like this early on in the life of a vehicle. The vehicle is gorgeous but perhaps they should have spent a little more time putting it together as it doesn't matter for eye appealing it is when it doesn't run!”

NHTSA complaint #10440235, filed 2011-12, 70,000 miles

“For quite awhile I had been hearing a ticking noise with my 2007 Mazda CX-7..brought it to the dealership in lafayette, la. To have it checked out. They checked it out, updated recalls in affect, stated they found nothing. Continued to hear it off and on, had my oil changed regularly. On july 10, 2010 my car broke down (4 yrs old, 33,000 miles) had it towed to dealer in beaumont, close to where it had broken down. The service dept. Asked for my service records after it was determined that problem was with the engine.. …”

NHTSA complaint #10344943, filed 2010-07, 33,000 miles

“My 2007 CX-7 started making a loud banging noise when I started it (may 7,2012). I brought it to the dealership to have it checked out and they said it was my timing chain & actuator (vvt) and it would take $1350 to repair. I paid the money and it was fixed in a couple of days. On june 7th,2012 I started to realize that my AC was not working, but had decided to wait a little bit to have it fixed because I was still hurting financially from the last fix a month ago. Than on june 9th, 2012, I went to start my vehicle and it sounded like it was about to explode. …”
