2009: “While driving home my car started burning. I pulled over with smoke pouring out of the engine area and the car just stopped. I opened the hood and there were flames coming up from behind the engine. The fire grew until it engulfed the front of the car. The fire department came and put out the fire. The 2009 matrix was totally destroyed. I noticed no prior warning signs or symptoms.”

2005: “I just spoke with Toyota regarding the remedy for the airbag recall problem. I was informed that I will be receiving a letter soon that states that they still don't have a remedy for this problem. How long can they get away with potentially endangering my passenger by not repairing this problem?”

NHTSA complaint #11308827, filed 2020-02, 204,000 miles

2008: “Someone pulled out in front of me and I hit them with the front of my car. I was driving 40 miles an hour on a city street. It crashed in the front end, radiator, fenders and hood. The airbags did not deploy. I had been sent a recall notice and scheduled an appointment at a local Toyota dealer immediately. The crash happened two weeks before the appointment. This is a known problem with the manufacturer. Nhtsa recall no. 19v-627”
