“Windshield cracked while driving on highway. I did not notice anything hitting it, but there are cracks on the center high position discovered when I stopped. I have contacted glass repair shop but there is no parts to make replacement for this vehicle. There is a nationwide back order on windshield for this model and 2016 -17 prius. All the models seems to have much higher incidents of glass breakage.”

NHTSA complaint #11014500, filed 2017-08, 150 miles

“Summary: have owned my Prius Prime for eight months and have needed to repair one windshield chip, replace my windshield once, and currently have another crack that cannot be repaired. Details: purchased my Prius Prime dec 10, 2017. On dec 20, 2017, got a chip in my windshield while driving to work along the local highway and was able to get it repaired same-day. In june 2018, got another chip in my windshield and the crack spread beyond repair almost immediately. …”

NHTSA complaint #11122418, filed 2018-08, 7,000 miles

“The vehicle had around 5k miles on it when this occured. A small impact near the corner of the windshield has grown to multiple spider veins spanning across to windshield in less than a week. Impact happened while I was in motion in a highway with few cars around me. I've driven my previous lexus for over 10 years and had two small repairable windshield impacts. The first one on my Prius Prime has resulted in catastrohic failure. The glass should be more resilient than this!”

NHTSA complaint #10995451, filed 2017-06, 5,000 miles

“I have had the Prius Prime for only four months when I was driving to work on a highway and a small rock hit the edge of my windshield and immediately left a one foot crack. There were no big trucks or big rigs near me so I'm not sure where the rock came from. I read the prius forums and found out that they happens quite often to prius owners and typically costs $1500 total to replace the windshield and recalibrate the forward-facing camera at the dealership. I have requested a quote from safelite autoglass and will call my aaa insurance. …”

NHTSA complaint #11011972, filed 2017-08, 8,800 miles

“Traveling at approximately 35 MPH, a small rock thrown up by oncoming traffic hit the lower left edge of the windshield, a large crack extending more than halfway across the drivers side windshield appeared. This appears to be a common issue with newer Toyota hybrids. Toyota dealership has quoted $1500 to replace windshield and re-calibrate safety equipment.”
