“Getting the clunk/thunk when turning the steering wheel left or right. Cant believe Toyota has not stepped up with a acknowledgement of mfg defect of material or pg design and assisted customers with this problem. I am now very concerned with my son driving this car and will have to have it repaired even without Toyota's help.”
NHTSA complaint #10512300, filed 2013-05, 82,080 miles“Knock and sudden shift of steering wheel. Noise appeared to come from front of vehicle and along the steering column or suspension system. Has grown worse with use, but vehicle only has 30,250 miles. We would like to know if it's safe to drive; danger of loss of steering. We do not feel safe, especially at highway speeds.”
NHTSA complaint #10545294, filed 2013-09, 25,650 miles“The electric power steering would not work. It has happened twice. The last time was july 28, 2014. We shut the car off, and restart it, and then it works ok. We are afraid that it might happen while we are driving it and we will have an accident. From online I have learned there have been a lot of occurrences of this. I'm surprised there hasn't been a recall, I think it is a real safety concern!”
NHTSA complaint #10617158, filed 2014-07, 111,000 miles“I was driving at 25mph when the red battery light came on and I lost the ability to steer. I was able to pull into a parking lot with much difficulty. I shut the car off to go into a store to let them know I was going to have my vehicle towed and went back to my car again to restart. The car would not restart. Had I not been on a highway going 55 I would have been in an accident since I had a difficult time turning the wheel at all.”
NHTSA complaint #10725431, filed 2015-06, 107,000 miles“I have a Toyota RAV4, 2007. I heard steering column noise right after it crossed 35000 mile only. I read in the internet many RAV4 user mention the same problem and Toyota knowingly not recalling the vehicles to fix it. The dealer wants to replace intermediate shaft with $550 cost. Since this is a known problem encountered by many RAV4 buyers, Toyota should replace this free.”
