“I have a 2013 Toyota Sienna awd with 23,500 miles on it and my brakes just started scrapping. I took the vehicle to a dealer and was told the brakes and rotors were worn out and needed to be changed. Cost: $970 and change. A car with such low mileage should not need new brakes and rotors.the dealership could not give me a reason for the wear but insisted the work was necessary and that they had the car apart and ready to go. Because it is a 2013 there was no warrantee so I had to pay the entire bill out of pocket.”
NHTSA complaint #11000221, filed 2017-06, 23,500 miles“When traveling around 30 to 35 MPH (well under speed limit) on dry clear roads, on left turns (often slightly downhill) suddenly the vsc and slip/trac lights up, the ABS system is activated / brakes engage. Foot is not on the brake and speeds are not excessive. I am not using run-flat tires, but that doesn't seem to make a difference for others online. I see dozens of similar complaints online about this same thing from 2001 to 2015 siennas. Two say that replacing rack & pinion fixed it; 1 says it does not. This started happening about 3 months ago, but is now happening more often. …”
NHTSA complaint #11375731, filed 2020-11, 155,600 miles“I bought my Sienna 12/27/2012. In october 2014 while driving home from lake tahoe, the car began shaking violently while traveling down hill. Upon returning home the car continued to shake anytime the brakes were applied. Took the car to the dealer and they said the rotors were warped and needed to be replaced. The car had $15k miles on it. This is unheard of. In july 2014 Toyota issued t-sb-0045-14 relating to this issue and recommended a shim kit as a repair. This was also added to my car. In may of 2016 while traveling down the grapevine from la the car again began to violently shake. …”
NHTSA complaint #10885156, filed 2016-07, 31,000 miles“I've just finished reading the NHTSA campaign number: 14v054000 that discusses: an electrical component within the actuator may experience an increased resistance resulting in the illumination of various warning lights, including those for the vehicle stability control (vsc) system, antilock brake system (ABS), and traction control system. I've had this happen three times over the past four months. I've taken it to the shop and they've reset the code and could not find the issue. It keeps coming back. I believe the 14v054000 needs to be expanded to include my vehicle.”
NHTSA complaint #10564313, filed 2014-02, 93,000 miles“Brakes locked up while trying to leave a parking lot. Many warning lights came on including vsc, ABS, and traction control and the computer said needs immediate service. The Toyota service manager said they've never seen this and that the actuator needs replaced. I've noted that there are 2 other instances of this issue and hope that this safety issue will be investigated. …”
