“Throttle valve sticks shut while decelerating. I adjusted the setscrew about a year ago(another 35,000 miles later) the problem has retured. Since I don't have any major problems I'll continue to adjust it myself. Taking my truck to the dealer only ever causes more problems!”

NHTSA complaint #718367, filed 2000-02

“The contact owns a 1996 Toyota Tacoma. The contact stated that while driving at low speeds, the vehicle suddenly accelerated without warning. He then crashed into a tree and the frontal air bags deployed. The contact was uninjured. The vehicle was not inspected by a dealer nor was it repaired. The failure and current mileage was approximately 245,000. The VIN was unavailable.”

NHTSA complaint #10384119, filed 2011-02, 245,000 miles

“Throttle valve cable broke during normal use of the truck. Noticed a change in transmission function and the vehicle would shift too soon and was not able to speed up normally. The transmission would shift from first to third gear at 10mph and then to 4th gear at 30 MPH. It would bypass 2nd gear so I had to shift it manually in order to acheive a speedy enough start to get on the freeway. Also occurred in my brothers 96 Tacoma about 4 months ago and it seems to me that it is too much of a coincidence for it to be occurring in the same model and year truck almost at the same time. …”

NHTSA complaint #739015, filed 2001-01

“While pulling into a parking space, accelerator pedal stuck, the truck accelerated to a high speed, causing the driver to lose control and crash into 3 other vehicles. Even though driver's foot was heavy on the brake pedal the truck did not slow down. The accelerator pedal has always been hard. The body work in being taken care. Owner is waiting for a inspector from Toyota to check the accelerator.”

NHTSA complaint #836302, filed 1999-03

“While driving the vehicle lurches forward which may cause an accident. Also activating the A/C, the vehicle accelerates up to 20 miles. Dealer replaced electronic control module. Problems is still occurring. Please provide further information.”

NHTSA complaint #830699, filed 1998-11
