“My daugther and I were driving to see her grandmother and I noticed the front end of my truck riding rough. When we arrived at her grandmothers I looked at my left front tire and noticed a bulge on the sidewall that was approximately 12 inches long and the width of the sidewall. If this tire were to blow out this may have caused serious injury to my daugther, myself and my truck. These were kumho 711 ectsa. It looks to be that the rubber on the sidewall seperated. I have less than ten thousand miles on these tires. This is obviously a manufacturing defect and is a serious safety issue. …”
NHTSA complaint #10039351, filed 2003-09, 183,000 miles“Rear passenger tire blew out. Blew gashes trough whole tire. Front passenger side is experiencing tread seperation and has a huge blister in it. Both driver side tires are experiencing tread seperation around the whole tire. Tires are brand new.”
NHTSA complaint #10000372, filed 2002-12, 168,000 miles“While entering a gas station, moving at approximately 15 MPH, the cable gave way causing the spare tire to fall and bounce, causing damage to the muffler, tailpipe and the spare tire rim. The cable currently has a frayed appearance and is no longer usable to support and shelter the spare tire. This was not caused by any negligence. A mechanic told me it looked like the cable wasn't the correct strength to support the load of the tire.”
NHTSA complaint #712856, filed 1999-10“Firezstone, wilderness at tires p235/75r15, DOT w2, replacement equipment with 20000 miles on a 1995, Chevrolet, S10 blazer. During wheel alignment mechanic noticed tread separation on front right tire.”
NHTSA complaint #893499, filed 2001-08“Chevrolet S10 1995 pickup separation of spare tire from vehicle. While performing routine maintenance on vehicle it was discovered that the spare tire was missing from the vehicle. The end of the cable which supports the tire appeared to have broken and had a frayed appearance. The bad new is that I do not know when the actual loss occurred or what damage/accidents may have resulted from the loss of the tire. This is a bad design. The truck should have retention bars to support the tire. Also, others may have experienced this problem but not yet have discovered it.”
