Example complaints

Selected from NHTSA records; personal details are removed. They are consumer reports, not findings.

“I was driving down a state road when I needed to stop for an intersection stop sign; my brake pedal went almost to the floor. The braking power was reduced to such a degree that I passed through the intersection just being missed by another vehicle traveling on the other roadway that did not have to stop. The brake fluid reservoir was empty in the front section and only small amount in the rear section. I drove the vehicle the rest of the way at 15 MPH because the braking ability was so diminished it would not stop fast enough at a higher speed. …”

NHTSA complaint #10519964, filed 2013-06, 125,000 miles

“I bought a new chevy SILVERADO 1500 4x4 in july of 2001. I don't drive it that much, and when I do, it is mostly freeway miles. About 5 times/year I'll tow a light boat to puget sound, and after coming back always hose off the boat, trailer, and salt water exposed area of the truck. In 2004 at 6770 miles, the rear rotors, calipers and pads were ruined (under warranty--cause determined to be debris caught up in mechanism). Good Chevrolet fixed perfectly. Now in march 2008 at only 18,700 miles (12k miles on new brakes), the rear brakes need to be completely rebuilt. …”

NHTSA complaint #10220040, filed 2008-03, 18,600 miles

“Brake rotors corroded completely , emergency brake rusted completely , massive rust under truck , brake calipers rusted , power steering went out ,a.c. Fan went out, short in wiring in door locks and windows, this a 2001, 56,000, miles, low mileage truck to have so many problems, the dealership said they had not seen this problem before, I looked it up, there is rusting and total corrosion of the brake rotors in many different states, over along period of time, even when the rotors are replaced they are rusting completely again. …”

NHTSA complaint #10158960, filed 2006-06, 56,000 miles

“Parking brake and fuel gage. I recently moved overseas with af and had to have my vehicle inspected for european standards. My parking break did not work at all. I found this hard to believe since I have never used it. I was mandated by european law to get fixed in order to drive it and pay a $30 for each month until I got it fixed. My fuel gage doesn't maintain how much fuel I have in my gas tank. When I have a full or empty tank the gauge just randomly boucess around with the unknown correct amount. I am currently setting the mileage until I can find someone to fix it and the parts I need.”

NHTSA complaint #10208231, filed 2007-11

“The contact owns a 2001 Chevrolet SILVERADO 1500 equipped with a dorman exterior door handle. While opening the rear drivers side door the contact's hand was cut on the door handle as it detached from the vehicle. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer to diagnose or repair the door handle. The failure and current mileages were 90,000. The VIN was unavailable.”
