What owners report
Owners of this model year most often describe fuel smells and leaks around the fuel rail and injectors, and transmission symptoms such as delayed or harsh shifting, surging, and cold no-shift conditions. Steering and front-suspension complaints tend to appear on higher-mileage cars, while the fuel-rail reports come in across a wide mileage range.
- Fuel system
Fuel smell and leaks at the fuel rail/injectors
- 111 complaints (15%)
- median 110,000 mi at 11.1 yrs old (11 state mileage)
- 6 mention a crash, fire or injury
- owner-quoted repair $480 (median of 5 quotes)
- filed 1995–2021
Complaints describe a strong gasoline odor, fuel visibly dripping onto the engine, and sometimes smoke from under the hood. Several owners say the injector O-rings were replaced, only for the smell or leak to return later, and some were told their vehicle was not covered by the fuel-injection recall because of its VIN. A few report the fuel rail itself cracked. Reported from roughly 21,000 to 175,000 miles, with many between 100,000 and 170,000 miles.
What to check: With the engine cold, smell around the hood and look for wetness at the rail and injector seals; ask whether recall 98V184000 was performed and whether the rail or O-rings have been replaced since.
2 excerpts from owner complaints in NHTSA records
“I own a 1994 Dodge Intrepid es that has had a series of fuel leaks at the fuel rail/ injector area. The o-rings were replaced twice in prior years. Last week 4 injectors and their seals were replace (at my expense) and once again tonight there is a strong smell of raw gasoline. This is a serious fire potential problem and seems relate to the switch to different gasoline formulations required here for summer driving. The car is again going back to the dealership for repairs.”
NHTSA complaint #10014388, filed 2003-04, 70,000 miles“I was driving down the road and I started smelling gas. The fuel rail on top of the engine started leaking by the passenger side front injector. There was a recall issued for this vehicle for the same issue that was supposed to correct it and the recall work was done according to the manufacturer. Years later it started leaking again. Apparently the recall kit does not fix the issue, eventually the fuel rail on top of the engine will eventually start leaking again which may result in an engine fire if not fixed. …”

Harsh or delayed transmission shifting
- 122 complaints (17%)
- median 75,000 mi at 10.7 yrs old (9 state mileage, few)
- 9 mention a crash, fire or injury
- owner-quoted repair $1,790 (median of 9 quotes)
- filed 1995–2008
Owners describe a lag between pressing the accelerator and the car moving, followed by a bang or lurch, and hard downshifts or jolts when slowing to a stop. Some report the transmission not engaging when cold, slipping out of gear, or being rebuilt repeatedly; dealers variously replaced the solenoid pack, updated the control module, or could not duplicate the problem. Appears from under 30,000 miles up to about 115,000 miles, often noted when cold or at low speed.
What to check: Drive the car from cold and note any delay going into gear, bangs, or lurching on stops; ask for transmission service records and whether the shifter interlock recall 04V021000 was completed.
2 excerpts from owner complaints in NHTSA records
“I have a 94 Intrepid that has a lurch when coming to a stop and has problems going into gear when it gets cold. I was told that the seals installed at the factory were faulty and the TSB instructs that new updated ones be installed with the overhaul. Also that the TCM (transmission control module) be update from a dealer to correct the cold engagement issue, the one I have now can not be updated and I need a new one. I was hoping to avoid the $2000+ overhaul. …”
NHTSA complaint #10070613, filed 2004-01, 75,000 miles“On september of 2000 I purchased a vehicle for my wife martha banuelos. The previous owner told me and gave receipts from the dealer where she purchased the car and repaired the transmission twice. The first time on 9/19/1999 with 45,888. The car will stall and will not stay running. The second time on 8/25/1999 with 45,932 m. The car won't shift when cold. A third time I took the car to the same dealer on 11/7/2000 with 51, 627 m. Problem, it did not shift when hot. The dealer corrected the problem by changing the solenoid pack. …”

Steering loss or looseness from tie rods and rack
- 68 complaints (9%)
- median 146,250 mi at 11.7 yrs old (6 state mileage, few)
- 4 mention a crash, fire or injury
- filed 1996–2010
Complaints describe a pop or crack followed by loss of steering control, with mechanics finding snapped rack and pinion parts, broken inner tie rods, or separated tie-rod bushing bolts. Others report heavy steering effort at low speed or the car pulling on its own, attributed to worn rack bushings. Mostly reported on vehicles well past 100,000 miles, though some occurred without a stated mileage.
What to check: Have the front end inspected on a lift for play in the tie rods and rack bushings, and listen for clunks or pops when turning the wheel at a standstill.
2 excerpts from owner complaints in NHTSA records
“Without any prior warning the steering system suddenly failed to respond, total failure, no steering control, while driving at 60 MPH on the freeway. The car steered itself hard to the right into a concrete baracad on the freeway and totaled the car. Air bags also failed to work. I have stored the car. It has not been touched since the accident. I will keep it in storage for a short time in case you want to inspect it. It appears based on an external visual only inspection that components in the rack and pinion steering system failed. …”
NHTSA complaint #10173300, filed 2006-11, 170,000 miles“While backing out of a parking spot, I heard a slight pop/crack and then lost complete control of the steering. I had no warning that such a catastrophic failure was about to occur. Had I been driving on the beltway there probably would have been more than one fatality. The dealer said my 7/70 warrenty had expired (time) and I would have to bear the cost of the repair which he initially guessed would be $1375 but could be much more once they got it up and looked at the damage. …”
NHTSA complaint #768698, filed 2002-10 - Suspension
Engine cradle and lower control arm separation
- 55 complaints (8%)
- median 83,074 mi at 13.7 yrs old (2 state mileage, few)
- 2 mention a crash, fire or injury
- filed 1998–2009
Owners report cracked or broken lower control arm brackets at the engine cradle, in some cases with the control arm separating and the wheel coming loose. Some say the recall repair was done but the problem returned, others that a dealer declined the recall work because the arm was already broken, and some describe rust-weakened rear suspension arms. Reported across a wide mileage range, including cars under 20,000 miles and others past 150,000.
What to check: Ask for proof that recall 99V215000 was completed, and have the cradle brackets and control arms checked for cracks or heavy rust before driving.
2 excerpts from owner complaints in NHTSA records
“Nhtsa recall 99v215000 on the engine cradle. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for the recall. However, the district manager is refusing to honor the recall because the lower control arm that attaches the brackets is broke. Please provide further details. All repairs finished using new factory parts. The consumer stated that no further action is necessary.”
NHTSA complaint #10111394, filed 2005-03, 151,000 miles“Rear suspension support arm on driver's side fatigued and separated causing loss of control of vehicle suddenly without warning. Support arm appears to have been weakened by rust corrosion, appears to be inadequate corrosion resistance. Inspection of passenger side rear suspension support arm appears to be weakened from rust corrosion as well and most likely will fail from fatigue too. Concern that failure occurs suddenly without warning and would result in loss of control and possible loss of life.”
NHTSA complaint #10286700, filed 2009-10, 15,148 miles - Electrical system
Engine stalling and intermittent gauge failure
Mentioned in 5 of 60 sampled complaints
Complaints describe the engine cutting out at speed or when coming to a stop without warning, sometimes restarting immediately and sometimes not at all. Several owners link gauge failures to the transmission not shifting into overdrive, and one report ties shifting problems to a tie rod rubbing the transmission wiring harness. Reported from about 70,000 to 150,000 miles, often as an intermittent fault.
Recall 94V0240001 related service bulletin
What to check: Check that the harness routing was inspected for rubbing, and watch the gauges and warning lights during a test drive; ask whether a service bulletin was applied for shift-cycle symptoms.

“Same as I have seen on the site, the 1994 Dodge Intrepid is stopping while in motion. At first, it would start again immediately, then after a few moments, then hours.. And now it is up to not starting at all. We have replaced several parts and nothing seems to make a difference. Do you have any idea what the problem can be? Please email with ideas..”
NHTSA complaint #10013652, filed 2003-03, 94,900 miles“1994 Dodge Intrepid transmission problems. Car has been diagnosed with transmission problems - right tie rod rubbing against automatic transmission wiring harness causing a electrical shortage. Transmission is not shifting properly, get stuck in second gear and check engine light comes on.”
NHTSA complaint #10163204, filed 2006-07, 148,500 miles
Buying note. On a car this old, the useful questions are about records: whether the fuel-injection, engine cradle, and shifter recalls were done, and when the transmission was last serviced. A pre-purchase inspection focusing on the fuel rail area, front suspension, and steering is worth the cost.
Summary written with AI from a sample of 60 NHTSA complaints for this model year (picked at random, with complaints that state a mileage and recent ones taken first), then checked automatically against the source records. Where a problem shows a complaint count, every complaint for this model year was matched with fixed keyword rules (written with AI and tested against the sample), and the mileage, age and repair figures are calculated from those complaints; owners' figures are as stated, not verified. Other counts refer to the sample. The excerpts come from NHTSA's public complaint records and are unverified; capitalisation is normalised, NHTSA staff notes are removed, and shortened text ends with “…”. Something wrong? Consumer found a recall # 00 v 268 000/fuel leakage on NHTSA website, although it not pertaining to this vehicle make, model, year; it's having the same problem out line in this recall. The dealer was not notified.”
NHTSA complaint #10101645, filed 2004-11, 75,785 milesSteering: “The vehicle started to turn itself when driving and could not be controlled while driving. This lead to us taking it to a tire shop and we were told the bushings on the rack and pinion and the bushings on the tire rod were gone off the car. The vehicle was not able to be driven until the bushings were repaired because the loss of control was so bad on the vehicle. The failure of the bushings caused the vehicle to have to be repaired. We almost loss complete control over the vehicle twice before we found out what was causing the extreme pull in the vehicle. …”

Dealer could not duplicate. Happened while driving past dealer, stopped and they checked for codes, none found. Happened again, dealer had code for airbag module this time, replaced part. Problem is still intermittent. 2003, driving at 75 MPH on highway, car stalled, no restart. Towed to dealer, they replaced timing belt and water pump. Also had brake rotors and pads replaced at 72,000. They were done at 55,000 also. Replaced tie rod ends 2004 at 97,000. …”
