“Rear taillight bulb blows out as if an electrical short in wiring. Bulb will look black, even the socket has black discoloration. This has been an on-going problem since we purchased car in 2009 with both the left and right rear tail lights. To date I have replaced about 15-20 bulbs to the extent I purchased two (2) boxes of bulbs a socket wrench and correct socket to keep in car to replace bulbs each time it happens.”

NHTSA complaint #10659228, filed 2014-11, 52,000 miles

“In june of 2009 I took my 2007 Ford Focus in for regular oil changing maintenance as well as to find out while the seat belt light came on when my seat belt was latched. The service attendant checked the seat and stated there was nothing wrong with the seat belt. Well a few weeks after that the light continues to flash only now the seat belt isn't latching properly. I again spoke with a representative who now informs me that my warranty expired and it will cost me $379 to correct this problem because not only do Ford has to fix the latch but it also has to be rewired. …”

NHTSA complaint #10305204, filed 2010-02, 58,000 miles

“Ford Focus, 2007 the gear shift in my 07 Ford Focus just fell off into my hand! I was at the store, and put it into reverse, and the button that you depress to shift into reverse popped out, followed by the spring mechanism that holds it into place in the gear column. I tried to put it back in, and finally was able to reach in and depress a small button, thus enabling me to shift it into drive and take it home. I called the dealership where I bought it, and my warranty has expired. (of course). I also called Ford, and there is no recall in effect. The part costs over $1500. To replace. …”

NHTSA complaint #10326474, filed 2010-04, 59,165 miles

“My 88 year old mother was pulling into her garage when grabbing the shifing lever to put it in park it came up out of the column along with the electrical connection causing the car to go forward and hit the boxes. The key was locked in place and the car wouldn't shut off. Piss poor design of screw holding the shifter on and the connection for the power.”

NHTSA complaint #10414646, filed 2011-07, 70,000 miles

“The contact owns a 2007 Ford Focus. The contact stated that while parked, the contact turned the air conditioning on to levels 3 & 4 and noticed that the air would not blow. The failure recurred on one other occasion. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the pigtail and the switch melted together. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The VIN was unavailable. The approximate failure mileage was 140,000.”
