Example complaints

Selected from NHTSA records; personal details are removed. They are consumer reports, not findings.

“It started with the fuel gauge fluctuating between full and empty with a full tank of gas and the ABS and brake light on dash lighting up for apparently no reason. Then it started giving me trouble starting and making a weird whining noise. I checked all the fluid levels and fuses, everything was ok. …”

NHTSA complaint #10369994, filed 2010-12, 237,000 miles

“While driving I tilted my steering wheel and the headlights stopped working. I found that as I moved the wheel up and down there was a spot at which the lights would stop working. After going to the dealership I they found that a wire in the junction block of the multifunction switch (blinker assembly) had shorted out causing the lights to go out. Dealership replaced the multifunction switch.”

NHTSA complaint #10206963, filed 2007-10, 46,515 miles

“First thing was that my gas gauge started to fluctuate. Up until the point that I didn't know how much fuel I had in my tank. Then my instrument cluster started to go. It started to fluctuate then dies from time to time. Rpm's , speed, gas, oil press, park, neutral, reverse, drive, 1,2,3, and miles driven cannot see anymore. Everything died the first time when I was driving home from work in the middle of the night on a dark road. Called dealer and dealer said it will cost me almost $600, which is ridiculous considering the fact that I just paid off the vehicle. …”

NHTSA complaint #10229047, filed 2008-05, 74,000 miles

“My ABS control module is not functioning properly. Abs is disabled and costs $1000 to replace. This is a safety hazard as the brakes can lock up at any moment or ABS is disabled and may cause brakes to lock up. The ABS light on dashboard is on continuously and the module will need to be replaced or further damage will occur.”

NHTSA complaint #10536388, filed 2013-08, 187,463 miles

“I bought a Gmc sierra c-1500 pickup truck, new in 2001. In sept '05, the ABS light came on & a humming noise could be heard even after the ignition was turned off. The odometer was at 50,000 miles, at that time. The problem was the ebcm shorted-out and needed to be replaced. Now, 31,000 miles & 3 years later (81,000 total miles), it shorted-out again & needed to be replaced. The cost of this part alone is $1,000.00 (+ over $200.00 installation). That part isn't even subjected to normal 'wear & tear' like brakes, because it's not a moving part. …”
