“I have replaced the exhuast manifold twice because it has cracked above the y connector at the pipe.now I will go with a borlla exhuast unit to see if this manufacturer defect can be corrected. Which I believe to be a defect in the motor mounts that are too week and allows the motor to lift too far and stress the pipe.”
NHTSA complaint #10059939, filed 2004-02, 80,000 miles“I have a 1999 Jeep Wrangler. The exhaust manifold cracked. At first I thought it was just mine but after some discussion with others I found this is common. Did not have it fixed immediately because at first it was not bad. I only discovered it after it became very loud. Hot exhaust blows on other engine components”
NHTSA complaint #10038944, filed 2003-09, 15,000 miles“Found crack in exhaust manifold between the #1 and #2 ports at around 68,000 miles, after discussing this problem with a number of other Jeep owners I learned this is a common problem with the 1999 and other years back. My complaint is, if daimler chrysler is aware of this problem and I am sure they are, why aren't they addressing it. Unhappy with dealer and stock manifold, replaced with after market exhaust manifold header.”
NHTSA complaint #10142934, filed 2005-11, 68,000 miles“I have had the exhaust manifold fail in my 99 tj twice now. The factory original cracked at about 39,000 miles and the new and improved oem replacement lasted 11 months (or 9,450 miles). This is getting very expensive...”
NHTSA complaint #10166608, filed 2006-08, 68,025 miles“52,000 on my 1999 Wrangler (have never been off roading in it). I just replaced the radiator with an after market brand - not jeeps radiator. I'm in the process of ordering a new exhaust manifold (mine is cracked). Once again I was advised to buy an after market manifold because the Jeep's manifold is a lesser quality. It has been explained to me that both of these repairs are frequent on this model and should be a factory recall.”
