What owners report
Owners of this model year most often write about the airbag warning light coming on, which many complaints attribute to the clockspring in the steering column, and about fuel splashing back out of the filler neck when refuelling. A further cluster of reports describes a violent front-end shake over bumps or at highway speed, and a smaller group covers electrical faults and engine noise or oil use. Complaints arrive at a wide range of mileages, from very low to well past 150,000 miles.

Airbag warning light on (clockspring)
- 138 complaints (28%)
- median 79,000 mi at 5.8 yrs old (92 state mileage)
- 4 mention a crash, fire or injury
- owner-quoted repair $500 (median of 8 quotes)
- filed 2011–2026
The airbag warning light comes on steadily or flashes with a chime while driving, and in some cases it also comes on and off when the steering wheel is turned. Owners say dealers or independent mechanics traced the light to the clockspring in the steering column, and some note that the horn and steering-wheel buttons stopped working around the same time. Several owners mention a clockspring recall and say their vehicle was not covered by it, or that a replacement did not resolve the light. Reported from about 22,000 miles up past 170,000 miles, often on vehicles used for commuting.

What to check: Turn the key to on and confirm the airbag lamp lights and then goes out, then turn the wheel lock to lock and watch whether the lamp flickers or the horn works. Ask whether the clockspring has been replaced and under which campaign.
2 excerpts from owner complaints in NHTSA records
“My airbag light keeps coming on intermittently. Took it to a dealership and says the clock spring has gone bad. I see there is a recall for Jeep's that are right handed for this same issue. I also see on the forums and this website that it is happening to a lot of left handed Jeep wranglers. I think the recall should be for both. This is a safety hazard as I learn my drivers side airbag will not deploy if I am in a wreck.”
NHTSA complaint #11388335, filed 2021-01, 100,000 miles“My 2011 Jeep Wrangler sport has less than 50,000 miles and my airbag light is on and has been on for at least 6 months or more. Why is the recall only for rh drive wranglers, from what I am reading there are several lh drive wranglers with the same issue. Also every time it rains front driver and passenger floors are wet underneath floor mat. I have read several owner complaints on this issue but manufacture does not seem to care.”
NHTSA complaint #10947043, filed 2017-01, 45,000 miles - Fuel system
Fuel spits back out when filling the tank
- 83 complaints (17%)
- median 43,000 mi at 4.5 yrs old (71 state mileage)
- 2 mention a crash, fire or injury
- filed 2012–2023
When the pump clicks off at full, fuel spits back out of the filler neck onto the body panel, the ground, hands and clothing, and the nozzle sometimes shuts off repeatedly before the tank is full. Owners describe trying different stations and pump positions without success, and one reports a dealer confirming the tank would need replacement. Some describe a fuel smell in the cabin afterwards. Reported from a few thousand miles up to around 140,000 miles, and it occurs every time the tank is filled to full.
What to check: Fill the tank during a test drive and watch the filler neck at the first click-off. Ask whether the fuel tank or filler assembly has been replaced, and check for a fuel smell around the tank.
2 excerpts from owner complaints in NHTSA records
“As I pump gasoline at different gasoline stations; the gas pump doesn't shut off and fuel spit-back onto the floor, hand and clothe. The smell of gasoline will be throughout the cab and in my hands and clothe. This is a health issue, because inhaling the fumes. Also if I don't have access to soap and water I must stay with gasoline in my hands and clothe.”
NHTSA complaint #10692127, filed 2015-03, 42,116 miles“Every single time I fill up the fuel tank, fuel spills out (spits out all over the back driver's side panel). This has been a problem since I've purchased the Jeep. I have to manually calculate how many gallons to put in every time I go to the gas pump. I've tried several different gas stations and pumps along with several different strategies of holding the gas pump and regardless the spills still happen when attempting to fill the tank full with gas. …”

Violent front-end shake over bumps ('death wobble')
- 57 complaints (12%)
- median 43,000 mi at 4.5 yrs old (49 state mileage)
- filed 2011–2026
Owners describe a sudden, severe shaking of the steering and front end after hitting a bump, an expansion joint or a dip, sometimes at highway speed, requiring a hard slowdown to regain control. Complaints mention tie rods, dampers, wheel bearings and worn front-end parts, and several owners say dealers could not reproduce the symptom or that repeated visits did not resolve it. Mostly reported between roughly 6,000 and 100,000 miles, and it tends to appear at higher road speeds or over uneven surfaces.

What to check: Test drive over a rough or uneven road at highway speed and feel for any shake through the wheel. Ask about front-end parts replaced (tie rod, damper, track bar, wheel bearings) and have the steering linkage inspected.

“I've experiencing a terrible wobbling when driving on the highway.I only drive back and forward to work. I do not off road at all!! I almost caused an accident the other day coming from work. It was terrible to say the least. I'm really afraid to use my Jeep and will never let my family it... Please advise what I can do to get it fix . I've taking it to the dealer several times already with no results.”

Engine ticking, oil use and bottom-end failure
- 29 complaints (6%)
- median 62,000 mi at 5.1 yrs old (29 state mileage)
- 6 mention a crash, fire or injury
- filed 2011–2021
Complaints describe a ticking or knocking sound from the engine, some with excessive oil consumption noted between changes and no visible leak or smoke. A few owners report sudden power loss followed by knocking and internal damage such as failed rod bearings or a broken piston, requiring major repair. Reported from around 74,000 to about 125,000 miles.
What to check: Listen for a tick or knock from a cold start and check the oil level and condition on the dipstick. Ask for oil change records and whether oil consumption was ever measured.

Buying note. Have a pre-purchase inspection focus on the airbag warning light and clockspring, the condition of the front steering and suspension parts, and oil level and engine noise, and fill the tank during the test drive to watch for fuel spit-back. Ask for any recall or bulletin work records so you know what has already been addressed.
Summary written with AI from a sample of 60 NHTSA complaints for this model year (picked at random, with complaints that state a mileage and recent ones taken first), then checked automatically against the source records. Where a problem shows a complaint count, every complaint for this model year was matched with fixed keyword rules (written with AI and tested against the sample), and the mileage, age and repair figures are calculated from those complaints; owners' figures are as stated, not verified. Other counts refer to the sample. The excerpts come from NHTSA's public complaint records and are unverified; capitalisation is normalised, NHTSA staff notes are removed, and shortened text ends with “…”. Something wrong? There is a crack in the top of the gas tank. My mechanic said that after research in trying to get a new gas tank, he found that this is an issue. Mopar has a significant backorder for these tanks. This is definitely a safety issue and I hope it will be looked into.”
NHTSA complaint #11112144, filed 2018-07, 100,000 milesElectrical system: “Clock spring needs replacement on the Jeep. The vehicle has 43000 miles and has been driven lightly off-road. Any time a bump is hit with the Jeep above 35mph, it goes into the death wobble, which doesn't go away until the car is stopped. I've tried fixing everything possible, but it still happens.
