“Braking inconsistently - sometimes easy to stop, sometimes hard. I had brakes looked at, and the man said it was the brake booster. He googled it, and found a recall online and told me to take it to my dealer. It doesn't look like there's an active recall - but a lot of complaints. What's going on? This is going to be expensive. My college age daughter drives that car. Do they have to have a severe accident to get that fixed? I can't afford to fix it right now.”

NHTSA complaint #11517304, filed 2023-04, 120,000 miles

“The brakes on our 2010 CX-9 are hissing upon brake engagement and have a hard feel to them for the first half or so. The brakes are slow to engage during this time. After the half way mark the brakes engage quickly and forcefully. It is consistent with the other complaints for the brake booster failure. I am having it looked at this week at a Mazda dealership.”

NHTSA complaint #10916374, filed 2016-10, 85,000 miles

“My vehicle is at about 87000 miles, the breaks started malfunctioning while driving on the highway texas 35 I have to press hard on the pedals in order for the car to stop[ I do hear kind a like a zizzle when I press on the breaks but even if I press hard the pedal to stop it still keeps going for about 3 to 4 feet.”

NHTSA complaint #11011860, filed 2017-07, 87,000 miles

“Brake booster, as I drove my car and get ready to brake it gets stiff along with a hissing sound and the vehicle feels as though it is still moving. I noticed it around april and thought I neede brakes until told others of the brake booster issue once I took my vehicle to Mazda. Of course I was advised that my brakes were in good shape the booster was the problem to the tune of $672.00 to repair it.”

NHTSA complaint #10881217, filed 2016-06, 105,000 miles

“Brake booster went out. Almost causing an accident because the brakes went stiff. I absolutely can not believe this isn't a recall. I guess it takes a serious injury or lawsuit to become a lawsuit. I was told by mechanic ti have to have repairs at dealer. Dealer is impossible to get a hold of for an appointment. I told them needs to be fixed asap and they booked me a week out!! So upset I drove and suddenly brakes stiffness. Could barely apply pressure”
