Selected from NHTSA records; personal details are removed. They are consumer reports, not findings.

“When I changed the oil in march, I noticed a huge hole on the inside of the left frame member, next to the gas tank. I then checked the right side, and found a long line of rusted through holes along the bottom of that frame member. I feel this is a major safety defect by the oem's selection of steel grades.”

NHTSA complaint #11009908, filed 2017-07, 175,000 miles

“The frame of the truck has completely rusted through just before the back drivers side wheel. It has split completely through the metal and runs all the way down toward the front . All the way down. It scares me to drive it bnut it is the only tranportation I have and no choice. This happened in the past year.”

NHTSA complaint #10905975, filed 2016-09, 175,000 miles

“Truck has perforated rust through the frame. After researching online, this appears to be a known issue impacting older Toyota tacomas. I have received no notice of any issue from Toyota despite having a good address on file, but after contacting Toyota, they have informed me of a 15 year extended program specifically for perforated frame rust issues on this truck. Per Toyota, this program lapsed two months prior to my call. …”

NHTSA complaint #10615018, filed 2014-07, 142,000 miles

“This is not a one time event, but a chronic problem of excessive corrosion on entire underside of vehicle including frame (1999 Toyota Tacoma). I chose incident date as approximate date that I first noticed. Vehicle was inspected and passed by dealer around july 2008.”

NHTSA complaint #10306291, filed 2010-02, 50,000 miles

“I was informed in sept. 2007 that my truck probably will not pass inspection in 2008 due to excessive rust on my trucks frame. The truck is only eight years old. Doesn't this constitute premature frame deterioration? The inspectors suggested that I have someone weld steel onto the frame. It was recommended that I do this before this winter so it is not exposed to any more salt from the roads.”
