Example complaints

Selected from NHTSA records; personal details are removed. They are consumer reports, not findings.

“When attempting to put the truck in gear to leave a gas station the entire shifter mechanism broke off at the mount within the steering column. After 1 google search it shows this is very common with my Tundra truck (many postings and complaints-issues). I was in a pickle to move my vehicle and was not safe in doing so.”

NHTSA complaint #10610869, filed 2014-07, 155,000 miles

“While accelerating from a turn, I heard a sound from the rear of the vehicle. Upon investigating the noise, I found the rear strap that secures the gas tank to the frame had rusted through. The gas tank was left hanging by only the front strap. What happens if a gas tank falls off a vehicle?”

NHTSA complaint #10605218, filed 2014-06, 135,800 miles

“Today I was cruising along at 50mph and my truck (2002 Toyota Tundra v8) felt as if the fuel cut out. I let off the throttle and got back into it and the response was very slow. Then there was no response at all as I coasted to a stop. The truck idled, but no response to the accelerator. This problem has occurred twice in the last week. Toyota troubleshooting code says it is a faulty accelerator pedal position sensor. They want $500 to fix.”

NHTSA complaint #10328573, filed 2010-05, 89,000 miles

“Toyota camry 2002 model; problem observed 6 months after I bought the brand new car; brake problem? Car accelerates. Reported to the dealer and then to the company; nothing has been done. I told them I am scared to death to drive this car because sometimes I cannot stop the car .”

NHTSA complaint #10060882, filed 2004-03, 7,500 miles

“My '02 Toyota Tundra would suddenly not idle on its on. Then it would run normally. This has happened twice now. Now I have to push the gas pedal half way to the floor to get any response. In researching the problem I discovered that there are a lot of people having the same problem. It is all related to either the throttle position sensor or the throttle level sensor. These parts cost around $275 each. Toyota mechanics know there is a problem here but Toyota will do nothing to help.”
