“Had what appeared to be a slow leak in rear tire. Took it to les schwab tire and they found it was a weld that was failing in the original stock rim. The split was approximately 8 inches long. I then spoke to a local Ford dealer who denied ever hearing any knowledge of such a thing and simply said you cannot believe everything you see on the internet after I had googled the issue. He said Ford takes these things very seriously but that this was something brand new. …”
NHTSA complaint #11088637, filed 2018-04, 130,000 miles“A wheel stud, Ford p/n yl3z 1107 ab, on the right front wheel/hub assembly would not tighten to the prescribed 150 ft-lbs torque because it stretched. The wheel stud stretched 0.044 before I stopped trying to torque it up to specification. The wheel stud and nut were replaced. The vehicle was stationary. There was no accident or incident involved. I believe that either Ford has overstated the tightening torque or there is a materials and/or heat treating defect. The wheel stud appears to be zinc plated. …”
NHTSA complaint #11078815, filed 2018-03, 83,180 miles“After noticing a low tire my driver was attempting to air it up but to no avail and we noticed it was leaking at a weld on the rim. We took it to a dealer and was told it was cracked about a third of the way around the rim where the center was welded to the outer rim. I had to buy a replacement wheel but our concern is that this might happen again. If it had cracked much farther the outer rim would have separated from the vehicle. Has this problem been reported before. Thank you curtis peterman alexander mechanical kansas city, mo”
NHTSA complaint #10367690, filed 2010-11, 110,000 miles“No injuries involved. While traveling along a local highway at approx. 45 to 50 MPH, I experienced a blow out of the left rear tire on a 2005 Ford f150 xlt extended cab-shortbed pickup. Upon inspection of the tire/rim by the aaa technician, it was determined that the oem steel rim had split open thus causing the blowout . It was further determined that the rim had split nearly 2/3 of the way around the rim. This is a stock oem steel rim with a chrome outer clad surface. As the truck is of high mileage ( I drive nearly 4200 mi. Month), the local Ford dealership was reluctant to replace it. …”
NHTSA complaint #10192574, filed 2007-06, 93,550 miles“Turning left into south bound lane of a highway when the right front upper control arm assembly caused the tire to detach from the that area. The tire landed on the highway however remained attached from the lower assembly. Due to the momentum of the vehicle was able to get across the highway to prevent a collision. Vehicle was towed to an automotive repair center. The right front upper control arm assembly was completely rusted through”
