“Air conditioning stopped working and shortly after vehicle began making grounding noise. Smell of burning rubber/plastic coming from vehicle. A/c compressor needs to be replaced along with orifice tube. Mechanic says it is surprising I even made it home. Upon research, I find that this is a common issue with the 2004 Jeep Liberty.”

NHTSA complaint #10608030, filed 2014-07, 89,900 miles

“I have a 2004 Jeep Liberty and I have had this front end shaking when you get up to 40 plus MPH and the front tires seems to drag. I have taken my car to a chrysler dealer ship but the problem was not repaired but the flushed the radiator, changed the oil and charged me $372.00 and I have not found out what the problem is with this 2004 Jeep Liberty.”

NHTSA complaint #10215608, filed 2008-01, 92,000 miles

“I was driving to work and my car started smoking under the hood and the exhaust was coming into the cabin. When I looked under the car, oil was pouring out of it. I took it to the shop and they had to replace both valve cover gaskets. Two weeks later my oil light came on and now my head gasket is leaking. This car is a 2004 and has 56,000 miles on it. The repairman said that he has never seen the valve cover gaskets go bad under 100,000 miles.”

NHTSA complaint #10256927, filed 2009-01, 56,000 miles

“Since purchase of 2004 Jeep Liberty in sept 08, I've had a hiccup when idling. It's also stalled a few times and not started twice. Four garages and two Jeep dealers later I was advised there is a slight miss in the cylinder. After spending over $300 in pre maintenance(new plugs which I had just replaced in dec and a de-carb) the engine is now hesitating and the problem is still there. Advised that I would have to pay again to have it looked at. I've spent $1700 in 10 months already. I'm tired of the lack of customer service - traded it in for a pontiac.”

NHTSA complaint #10274076, filed 2009-06, 50,000 miles

“Replaced head gasket, had to have car towed on 9/4/07. Took until 10/1/07 to get my car repaired. My mechanic called for parts and were told they were back ordered. Well, when I picked vehicle up on 10/2/07 I was told the parts were being snatched up due to demand on the Jeep Liberty (mine's an '04) having problems with some of the head gaskets. My car only had 43,000 when I purchased used/new 6/1/07. When I put in shop it had 49,575 miles. My mechanic stated that the gasket should have been good for at least 100,000 miles.”
