Example complaints

Steering: “At random times, the power steering goes out on the spyder with no warning. It doesn't show any codes when it happens. Doesn't matter if it's on a straight stretch or curve. Difficulty turning the wheels when this happens.”

NHTSA complaint #10626682, filed 2014-08, 21,000 miles

Transmission and drivetrain: “Can-am spyders with the semi-automatic se5 transmission can lurch forward and rapidly decelerate when the throttle is mostly open and the transmission shift button is pressed to shift to the next higher gear. Opening the throttle for quick acceleration, when merging into highway traffic, for instance, results in forces that push a rider's body toward the rear of the motorcycle. …”

NHTSA complaint #10382068, filed 2011-02, 2,000 miles

Brakes: “Brp sent me a letter to recall my can am Spyder Rt because brakes could fail. The only dealer for them around here is middletown cycles and since I did not buy vehicle from them they are telling me about 8 weeks maybe servicing it if they get time. I thought when a recall was on a vehicle they are suppose to fix in a timely matter, I don't think maybe in 2 months is a timely manner. Please can you help me or give me advice what I can do.”

NHTSA complaint #10456710, filed 2012-04

Engine cooling: “Strong smell of gasoline in garage after ride on a hot day. Asked local dealer and was told not to overfill fuel as it would overflow into a canister. So I never overfill. But after several more instances riding on hot days I always smell gas and have noticed several times that the fuel in the tank is boiling. You can open the cap and see it. This has been ongoing since purchase in may2011. Dealer told me my VIN was not part of the recall for new gas cap. But we have been concerned since we purchased this bike, gas fumes in the same room with a water heater.”
