Example complaints

Selected from NHTSA records; personal details are removed. They are consumer reports, not findings.

“My son fell asleep while driving and hit a tree and none of the airbags deployed. He had his seatbelt on however I don't think it worked properly either due to his chin hit the steering wheel and head hit the windshield. He pushed the entire steering column into the dash about 4-5 inches and couldn't even move the shifter on the column. The truck is totaled and there is major damage to the entire front of the vehicle as he hit the tree head on but toward the passenger side. This is a 2000 chevy silverado crew cab, 4x4, stepside”

NHTSA complaint #11364061, filed 2020-10, 150,000 miles

“The contact stated while driving 45 MPH on a country road, while the front driver side seat belt was engaged, the strap assembly and retractor would not retract properly back into place. The vehicle was inspected by a dealer who determined the entire front driver's seat belt assembly needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was contacted. Updated 10/25/2006 -”

NHTSA complaint #10169918, filed 2006-10, 76,000 miles

“Overly sensitive seat belt trigger. Slightest movement while driving causes seat belt to lock, restricting required movement for safe vehicle operation, such as looking over shoulder while driving to see if safe to change lanes or while backing out of spaces. Operator of vehicle must fight with seat belt until it releases. Seat belt has been changed 3 times without resolve. This has been happening since purchase of vehicle 5 years ago.”

NHTSA complaint #10132487, filed 2005-08

“Braking system malfunctioned, causing extended stopping distance which may result in a crash. Also, rear passenger's seatbelt locked up while in use, causing the passenger to feel locked in . Dealer cannot find cause of problem.”

NHTSA complaint #857597, filed 2000-02

“While driving on highway at 55 MPH left brakes locked up, vehicle went through a ditch and hit an enbankment. Upon impact, both airbags didn't deploy. Also, seat belt broke.”

NHTSA complaint #847833, filed 1999-09
