“On sunday, november 3, 2013, at approximately 8:40am, I returned to my car with several bags of groceries. I opened the rear door and placed the bags inside. When I shut the door, the rear hatch window exploded into a thousand pieces. There was glass everywhere inside the car and in the lot. It was a cool morning (maybe 45 degrees f), but not particularly cold.”

NHTSA complaint #10550693, filed 2013-11, 39,400 miles

“I was traveling during the holidays and went to a car wash. When the attendant went to close the rear lift gate the back window glass exploded outward and completely shattered. I have had the window replaced at my expense with the revised window components listed in the Ford TSB 11-2-9. The car wash provided me with security camera footage of the incident.”

NHTSA complaint #10445044, filed 2012-01, 46,307 miles

“Ford Escape rear window hinges. The hinges disintegrated and the glass almost caused serious injury. I luckily caught the glass before it fell. I noticed a white residue on the glass whic was from the faulty hinges. My car was in my garage.”

NHTSA complaint #11104705, filed 2018-06, 105,000 miles

“My car was parked at my mothers in front of her garage. I was inside the barn with her and we heard this noise. I looked outside and my rear window on the hatch had exploded. It was only about 70 degrees and cloudy outside, the vents were open and the drivers side window was part way down for air. No one was near the car when it happened. It just exploded for no known reason. Nothing left to it.”

NHTSA complaint #10641555, filed 2014-10, 35,000 miles

“Rear window shattered when I closed the liftgate while it was sitting in my driveway! Wasn't shut hard, actually impossible to slam one of these lifgates. There were no obstructions to make contact with the glass.”

NHTSA complaint #11162923, filed 2018-12, 152,000 miles
