“The tread peel off the tire at 70 MPH, damaging the wheel well, fender, and running board. I return to firestone and showed them the tire and they said there was no thing they could not, because it was not one of the recall tires. We are very lucky that no one got killed. These fr480 need to be recalled. ( DOT number: tire size: p235r75-15 )”

NHTSA complaint #731313, filed 2000-09

“I was on my way to work when the firestone tire blew causing damage to the wheel area. Firestone tire blew out. No estimate, at this point, tire is firestone atx and size is 235/75r15. I did call firestone 800 number and filed a claim. If there's anything additional we need to do, please advise. Thanks (claim# 25-5427-055)”

NHTSA complaint #6900148, filed 2000-09

“My tires failed a different way .the rubber separated from the bead that seals against the wheel. I haven' t heard of this problem being mention during this recall. I had to have two firestone atx tires replaced within the last two years. Both tires were replaced with the same problem. The problem I encured is as dangerous as the tread separation that you are investigating.( DOT number: tire size: 235/75/r15 )”

NHTSA complaint #730722, filed 2000-09

“Time of incident 07:30 am; no heavy load; entire tread came off severly damaging left side panel, pipe to gas tank, and bed. Truck was yanked around, but gained control. Tire continued to hold air, and was still holding air until new tire was purchased. I purchased a complete new set of wilderness tires on the same day due to mileage and not wanting mismatched tires. Now I am stuck with another set that could potentially be just as dangerous. This incident occured prior to the publicity on firestone tires. Otherwise, I would have bought another brand. …”

NHTSA complaint #729879, filed 2000-09

“Consumer was driving when truck began to vibrate real badly, and he pulled to side of road, found nothing. Then, resumed and by the time he reached home tire was almost flat. He examined tire and found the tread was coming off. The firest failed tire had severe cracks between the tread. The other two tires also had cracks. The customer replaced them.”

NHTSA complaint #870680, filed 2000-09
