“My 2000 Ford F-150 with 5.4 trident engine blew a spark plug out of the cylinder head. I had no problems before this. I understand this happens to hundreds of 5.4 engines. There are no recalls for this defect. Can anything be done about this motor?I cannot afford the $3000.00 repair bill. Ford knows about this but will not do anything about it.”

NHTSA complaint #10409101, filed 2011-06, 223,000 miles

“I have had 2 spark plugs blow out of cylinders, once while driving and once while it was idling in the driveway. The spark plugs were torqued in using a torque wrench, but work loose with time. I have to check the tightness of the plugs every six months or they will loosen up and blow out. I have helicoils put in for the threads, but it is $400 each time it happens.”

NHTSA complaint #10392826, filed 2011-03, 125,000 miles

“I own a 2000 Ford F-150, triton 4.6 liter. July 2007, blown spark plug from cylinder head; cost for repair $636.00. May 2009, blown spark plug (#3) from cylinder head; cost for repair $606.00 plus $81.00 for rental vehicle. I understand Ford will not take responsibility for repairing and or reimbursing a customer for their expenses. Signed, another unhappy Ford owner.”

NHTSA complaint #10269803, filed 2009-05, 126,890 miles

“For the third time I am having to take my 2000 Ford f150 in to have the heater core replaced the first two times I took it into the dealership to determine the problem. Each previous time ended with the heater core being replaced. Each time the issue is preceded by fluid leaking onto the street and into the cab. As it drips into the cab it gives off a pungent smell. The first time the heater core was replaced I paid 800 dollars for the work. …”

NHTSA complaint #10372446, filed 2010-12, 75,000 miles

“Blown spark plug on my 2000 Ford F-150 5.4 triton. Known to only have half the required threads in the cylinder head for the spark plug, have had neither compensation or a recall. This is very dangerous as it happened to me towing a boat going on to the interstate. Destroyed the plug, the coil pack (cop style) and the intake elbow of my after market intake system. Over $600 in damages.”
