“I purchased my 2006 Freestyle new and love the car but it started this accelerating for no reason. I go to park and it accelerates and scares me. I am almost afraid to drive it. This has happened at least 5 times. Mostly in the last week. Please recall this car before somebody is seriously hurt. My son said its a throttle problem about $400.00 to have it fixed.”
NHTSA complaint #10401533, filed 2011-05, 60,000 miles“My 2006 Ford Freestyle lurches and surges. When put into gear my Freestyle will lurch violently and while driving it will surge power. While sitting and in gear power surges and lurches forward forcing the driver to press the brake hard to keep the car from jumping forward. While cruising power will surge without input from the driver.”
NHTSA complaint #10425402, filed 2011-09, 75,352 miles“2006 Ford Freestyle accelerates - surges in reverse. Was in a parking lot and went from park to reverse. Before I could step on the gas, it accelerated and I had to slam on the brakes. I nearly ran into a family. No car should be able to do that on its own. I am also disappointed that this is a known problem and nothing has been done about it.”
NHTSA complaint #10348060, filed 2010-08, 54,425 miles“After returning from the Ford repair center, the car lost power in the accelerator. My husband was unable to make the car move forward while pressing on the gas pedal. Ford came to pick up the vehicle and we were later told that the engine was blown and needed to be replaced. We have had the car approximately seven months and have driven it for for less than 8,000 miles.”
NHTSA complaint #10417409, filed 2011-08, 83,000 miles“When car is in drive and or reverse it accelerates on its own. It lunges forward then stalls out. The wrench light appears and now the engine light is on. This was happening a year ago and I took it in and the dealer couldn't find the problem. It is doing it again. It is very dangerous because it happens at stoplights stop signs and when I am pulling out of driveways.”
