“Whenever it rains, the backup camera on my 2016 Toyota Camry se gets water clogged which renders visibility by this device useless. The Toyota dealership states nothing can be done to fix this problem. Toyota's hotline states nothing can be done to fix this issue. This is a safety feature failure. In the rain, you cannot see what's behind you on the backup camera when you are backing up. I have had backup cameras on previous toyotas and never had this problem before. This has been an ongoing problem since purchase of this particular vehicle.”
NHTSA complaint #11010339, filed 2017-07, 17,000 miles“During heavy rain, the water from the wheel wells is thrown up onto the windshield and the windshield wipers cannot keep up with it. This has happened at 30 MPH, as well as higher speeds. This completely obscures visibility and has nearly caused two accidents, as well as some very frightening incidents. These occurred on highways and local paved roads. Heavy water thrown by other vehicles can't be taken care of by the wipers, forcing the driver to guess where the road and other vehicles are.”
NHTSA complaint #11096919, filed 2018-05, 35,000 miles“The engine quit running whenever the headlights, turn signals, or wipers were turned on. This was obviously a serious safety problem when driving! It began intermittently on 6/30/25, but it became a consistent problem by 7/7/25, so I took the car to the closest Toyota Dealership for evaluation. I can provide their service report to you if requested. It took them 6 hours and $1000 to diagnose the problem as bad electrical grounding points (high resistance), which were only revealed after they removed the front bumper. …”
NHTSA complaint #11672467, filed 2025-07“The contact owns a 2016 Toyota Camry. The contact stated that while driving approximately 65 MPH, the glass sunroof suddenly exploded causing glass pieces to enter the cabin of the vehicle. No injuries were reported. The cause of the failure was not yet determined. The local dealer and manufacturer were not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 127,000.”
NHTSA complaint #11438356, filed 2021-10, 127,000 miles“The contact owns a 2016 Toyota Camry. While driving with the windows down, the vehicle vibrated violently and prevented the contact from using the interior and exterior mirrors. The dealer was aware of the failure, but was unable to repair the vehicle. The manufacturer was not notified. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 5,422.”
