“I had the spiral cable fixed under the airbag recall in 2012. Now the light is on again and they want to charge me $500 to fix the same problem. It seems to me if the fix breaks then there was never really a fix. So I guess now I will be driving without an airbag since I dont have the money to get this fixed. I will never again in my life purchase another Toyota and will tell everyone I know to do the same!!”

NHTSA complaint #11080705, filed 2018-03, 175,000 miles

“My airbag light came on last week and I found a recall for this issue. I just found out that the recall for the airbag light due to a spiral cable in the steering wheel of my Toyota was not covered for my Tacoma model. Further diagnostic revealed it is the spiral cable and they are charging me $600.00. They said it is a safety concern and the airbag would not have deployed.”

NHTSA complaint #10621095, filed 2014-08, 112,751 miles

“I do not see the recall for the spiral cable assembly on my Tacoma. I read that this VIN is part of a recall for the wiring in the steering wheel that controls my passenger airbag, cruise control and some other functions. It has malfunctioned. Why is it not listed on your website? When I checked on the status of this recall, it shows that my model, according to the VIN does qualify for this. My passenger airbag is not working, and my cruise control is no longer working at speed.”

NHTSA complaint #11119717, filed 2018-08, 80,000 miles

“Airbag light stays on for no reason. Never a vehicle crash or airbag deployment. Only 49,800 miles. Spiral cable/clock spring sensor.. I have seen many on this site and after researching, knew mine failed. This should be a recall. Toyota charged me $565.40 to repair. Please recall this obvious defect....”

NHTSA complaint #10405531, filed 2011-06, 49,800 miles

“Two years ago the warning light activated for my airbag. After several recall notices on other components I eventually took it in for the repairs. I was shocked to learn the spiral cable had failed and it would be approx. $800 to have repaired. An internet search indicates this is a huge issue with many complaints documented. This should be a recall since it is so common and a safety concern.”
