Example complaints

Selected from NHTSA records; personal details are removed. They are consumer reports, not findings.

“My husband was rear-ended by a car at approximately 30mph in our 1992 Dodge Grand Caravan. The back of the drivers seat collapsed. Fortunately he was not hurt, but he could easily have lost control of the vehicle. Also, if our 8 year old child had been with him, she would have been riding in the seat directly behind the driver and could have been severly injured.”

NHTSA complaint #10000014, filed 2002-12

“While sitting in the driver's seat seatback snapped and then collapsed onto the rear seat. This happened while I was simply reaching into my front pocket for my keys. I was not injured and feel very fortunate that my children were not in the back seat at the time the seat failed. I went to white bear Dodge and talked to the service manager. He said that chrysler does not supply parts for seats, and that a new seat would not be available for my vehicle. I believe that this is a safety related defect that the manufacturer must fix, and I need to know how to proceed.”

NHTSA complaint #10100625, filed 2004-11

“Harness straps on the integrated child safety seat no longer function. The locking mechanism no longer locks the harness straps in place. The problem has been reported to the dealership. Parts are not available to correct the problem with the seat. The bench seat will have to be replaced to correct the problem. Please provide any further details.”

NHTSA complaint #836658, filed 1999-04

“The 2nd & 3rd row seats are self releasing. Seats would pivot forward. When latched or locked would release the entire seat. This would cause the seat to be unstable & the occupants shifting around.”

NHTSA complaint #871792, filed 2000-09

“While stopping, vehicle was rearended by truck, hit guardrail, front occupants forced forward/backward, both front seats snapped like twigs, seatbacks collapsed completely, fell backwards with occupants, also no deployment of driver's air bag.”

NHTSA complaint #801027, filed 1996-09
