“I pulled my Ford Expedition 2002 into a gas station, turned off the engine, and got out to pump gas. I began to notice that everyone else began frantically leaving and telling me to run. I saw smoke coming from my hood and assumed that it was just running hot but soon realized that the engine was off. Within seconds I began to see flames and ran in fear that the entire gas station was going to explode. Luckily fire trucks came within a minute a put the flames out and no one was harmed.”
NHTSA complaint #10407457, filed 2011-06, 152,000 miles“An original equipment never changed spark plug on my 2002 Ford Expedition suddenly and without warning blew off my engine, stripping the threads on the engine block. Prior to this failure, the engine was running well and without problems.”
NHTSA complaint #10156099, filed 2006-04, 120,000 miles“My 2002 Ford Expedition experienced an electrical malfunction due to a liquid build up in its system. The dealership said they could not determine how the moisture was entering the vehicle. The audio system and windshield wipers would not operate in the reverse or drive positions. The vehicle was returned to the dealership twice, on the last occasion, a small fire started, resulting in the starter being burned up. No injuries occurred, but the dealership charged me $1065.70 on the first repair bill, and 335.00 on the second repair bill. …”
NHTSA complaint #10149841, filed 2006-02, 97,000 miles“The spark plug in my 2002 Ford Expedition blew out while I was driving the speed limit on the highway. After this happened, I tried unsuccessfully to get my car repaired at a non-dealer mechanic. Every mechanic I called said that they would not touch my car because of the engine and the threads being insufficient. And that most of the repairs are not lasting so the situation escalates to the point where they are losing money to fix this problem that they did not create. The dealer fixed my car and said that the fix has no warranty even though it cost me $1116.98 to repair. …”
NHTSA complaint #10250186, filed 2008-11, 94,600 miles“Two large bubbles developed on the sidewall of the front driver's side tire. The rear tail light lens was cracked, and the trim for the center console was replaced.”
