“My 2002 Ford Expedition od light flashes on and off. I was driving down i75 and my transmission kept shifting in and out of gear.. My whole trip. It slammed into gear almost causing me to loose control of my vehicle. This transmission is definitely a safety hazard. It does not do it all the time seems like when we hit bumps in the road.”

NHTSA complaint #10318257, filed 2010-03, 110,000 miles

“Transmission slip. O/d light started to blink and transmission clunks into gear. This problem seems to be very prevalent as a few of my friends who own 2000 to 2002 model fords have had this problem. They have had their transmissions replaced or rebuilt. This is a very common problem and the manufacturer is ignoring the problem with their vehicles. 4r100 transmission. I believe this is a solenoid body or harness malfunction.”

NHTSA complaint #10310688, filed 2010-02, 83,000 miles

“My 2002 Ford Expedition has always had transmission shifting problems. Over the years, it will sometimes not go out of 4x4 without some gentle coaxing. Just the other day, it shifted out of gear on the highway and the overdrive light started flashing. I started to hear a sound like I was dragging something. When I stopped, I had to drive it in manual 2 just to get it home. At home, it would not go into reverse and was acting like the front wheels were locked up when I put it in neutral. …”

NHTSA complaint #10377116, filed 2011-01, 160,000 miles

“On december 21st 2012 I left to drop my daughter at daycare... We got into the vehicle and I found I was unable to get my vehicle out of park and had to put it in neutral and start it (also found that the windows and wipers weren't operating at all either) ... My daughter stated mommy, I smell something burning and my assumption was the fuse had blown... I drove a few blocks and dropped her off and then stopped a block away at the local convenient store and upon exiting the store came out and found flames pouring out of my driver side wheel/ hood area. …”

NHTSA complaint #10493648, filed 2013-01, 160,000 miles

“My transmission shift lever would not move. I called for an assistance, I was told my shifting cable would not moved and probably the cable was broke. I'd asked the towing person to bring my Ford Expedition Ford dealer in bellflower. I search the internet for relative issues regarding my problem was identical to nhsta recall id # 97v17100 and 97v14700. I believe that this is still on going problem with Ford Expedition since 1997 as indicated to the recall number date. I asked for the old part (shifting cable assembly so I could evaluate what when wrong. …”
