“I had an accident in a rented 2007 Ford escape in which the airbag deployed. It exhausted hot gasses near my wrists, sufficient to melt the fleece I was wearing and give me second degree burns on both arms. Either the airbag malfunctioned in doing so, or there is a design flaw in venting the gases near the position where the driver's hands and arms are most likely to be.”
NHTSA complaint #10172521, filed 2006-11“The contact owned a 2007 Ford Freestyle. While driving approximately 45 MPH, the contact's vehicle rear ended another vehicle. The air bags failed to deploy. The driver sustained back, neck, and chest injuries that required medical attention. A police report was filed. The vehicle was destroyed. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 100,000.”
