“After starting the car in my driveway, I heard a loud 'helicopter sound' under the hood (to which I have come to find out was the transmission (CVT)). When I put the car into reverse, it violently raced forward, hitting the brick wall of my house. I have pushed it a few feet back and have not restarted the car for fear of this happening again.”
NHTSA complaint #10967636, filed 2017-03, 150,582 miles“As has been reported by others, the vehicle will accelerate unexpectedly at low speeds when in reverse and drive, while the brake is engaged or I'm just letting off the brakes. I have to mash the brakes hard and keep them engaged for several seconds until the acceleration slows to normal. The problem seems to happen more frequently when the A/C is on.”
NHTSA complaint #10460735, filed 2012-06, 44,000 miles“My Freestyle has started to lunge forward at times when immediately taking my foot off the brake in forward or backward motion. After making a turn today it did it too, but this time the transmission light came on. It has happened many times over the last couple of months. The weather has been very hot too. I have a new teenaged driver so this is disconcerting.”
NHTSA complaint #10466429, filed 2012-07, 100,000 miles“My 2007 Ford Freestyle has been accelerating without the gas pedal being pressed. It usually occurs when in reverse. It does not do it everytime. The last few days it has been doing it in drive as well. Today it was enough to cause the warning light to come on. I was able to stop my vehicle with the brakes. This is getting worse and I am afraid it may lead to an accident.”
NHTSA complaint #10457571, filed 2012-05, 83,000 miles“Air conditioning does not work when driving under 35 MPH or especially when at an idle. Air is not cool at all. Then when I speed up, I have air again although occasionally car will start to die and dash lights up and then it surges and is fine again when going down the highway at higher speeds. This is mostly when it is hot outside. When cool or raining, the problem is better.”
