“I applied the brakes slowly as I was driving on the highway moving about 25 MPH and instead of slowing down, the car accelerated--it jolted forward! I stepped on the brakes harder. This happened twice on one drive--I almost hit an 18 wheeler. Is there something I should do? I'm not sure if it is safe to drive.”

NHTSA complaint #11074019, filed 2018-02, 156,000 miles

“I was stopped in line of a drive thru restaurant. The vehicles were not moving and I was waiting with my foot on the break. All of a sudden the engine surged and the car lurched forward hitting the car in front of me. I pushed as hard as possible on the break pedal but the car did not stop until it hit the car in front of me.”

NHTSA complaint #10760868, filed 2015-09, 94,700 miles

“We bought a 2010 Toyota Camry less than six months ago. From the beginning we had problems with the brakes, which makes a knocking sound. Took it back to fred haas Toyota on two to three occasion, they claim nothing was wrong each time. I also experienced the acceleration problem which I told them about, still nothing was done. We have 5 years to pay for a car that is a danger to myself & my family.”

NHTSA complaint #10316335, filed 2010-03, 6,349 miles

“We purchased a 2010 Toyota Camry in august of 2009. We have had several issues with the car since we purchased it. Our main concern is that on occasion when applying the brake the car with actually lurch forward as it brakes. It does not do this all the time and the malfunction is not predictable.”

NHTSA complaint #10314019, filed 2010-02, 10,000 miles

“Ever since I have owned this car I've noticed the accelerator and brakes are extremely touch and impossible to accelerate smoothly from a stop. The brakes are also extremely touchy so it's hard to come to a smooth stop without jerking. I have never had a problem like this and after reading all the complaints about about the accelerator and brakes I'm very worried that my car will eventually cause an accident. I would like to know if the people who had accidents or near accidents had this problem before the car went out of control. …”
