Example complaints

Selected from NHTSA records; personal details are removed. They are consumer reports, not findings.

“We replaced the fuel pump and fuel filter after the car continued to cut off while driving. Another issue was sometimes while driving the car would automatically speed up which made braking hard and rough. I was recently told by the mechanic to replace my ignition switch which is supposed to fix the car turning off while driving.”

NHTSA complaint #10573476, filed 2014-03, 177,900 miles

“I've replaced battery, head gaskets, overflow tank, air system connectors, water pump, pcv valve, evap canister, spark plugs, spark plug wires, radiator, camshaft sensor, coolant temp sensor, but my car is still leaking coolant from underneath lower intake manifold and isn't trying to start. I've spent over $2000 and still haven't seen results or got it to fully function. Last time I drove it was on regular georgia roads going to and coming home from work when it over heated twice going both ways.”

NHTSA complaint #11327519, filed 2020-06, 206,000 miles

“I was traveling to brighton, co from ft. Morgan, co to seller my 2000 chevy Malibu. Our intended purpose was to take the funds from the sell and pick up 1996 chevy s10. Prior to this trip my car had difficulties starting but never failed to start after several attempts. The car engine stalled coming off of the off ramp at around 30 MPH. When the car stalled I had to manually steer the vehicle to get it to the shoulder of the road (I just had carpool tunnel surgery and it was painful to do so). …”

NHTSA complaint #10503233, filed 2013-03, 115,000 miles

“Going to work car just dies. Waited for a tow truck. Took to my mechanic. He replaced the fuel pump. My car is a 2000 mailbu which only has 15,000 miles on it . Cannot belive that this part would fail that soon. This repair cost me 500.00 the part alone was of course a dealer only part. Was 350.00 plus a filter. Outrageous. Are these things made out of gold.”

NHTSA complaint #10072939, filed 2004-05, 15,000 miles

“Vehicle stalled while driving on highway I-295 south at 65 MPH. Apparently, gasoline was not getting to the fuel pump. Almost caused an accident; I had to coast from the fast lane to the shoulder (three lanes)...it was scary! Vehicle was towed to dealership (brandow Chevrolet, florence, nj). The fuel pump relay and sender was bad. Had to be repaired/replaced.”
