“We were driving down the road and the rear of the Jeep began smoking. We pulled over and immediately the Jeep burst into flames. We grabbed a suit case and got away from it. The fuel tank exploded and the entire Jeep was engulfed in flame and burned to the ground. We were moving so we had most of our personal possessions in it. Obviously everything was lost. The insurance company refused to cover any of the costs of towing. My tow bill alone was over $700. We have not even totaled the loss of our personal property.”

NHTSA complaint #10648581, filed 2014-10, 134,658 miles

“Intermittently vehicle hesitated and had low fuel pressure. This resulted in fuel pump failure. The failure occurred because debris was coming off the fuel tank and clogged the fuel lines and pump. Fuel pump and fuel filter were replaced 3 times within a month. The fuel regulator was replaced twice, but failure recurred. Also, consumer contacted manufacturer, who provided little assistance.”

NHTSA complaint #10079479, filed 2004-06, 109,628 miles

“My main concern is that I have a paint peeling problem on the hood of my car. Originally I just thought that it was my car but there are 2 other people in my office building with the same color, year make and model as my car and we all have the paint peeling problem in the same areas.”

NHTSA complaint #10069189, filed 2004-01

“I am a senior adjuster at progressive ins and have notice a serious common problem happening with 93 & up Jeep grand cherokees with a v8 engine. I'm sure it is due to the harsh environment in the southwest but could very well be possible and just due to age. The problem is that the plastic crossover hose on the fuel rail is rupturing and spraying fuel on the distributor resulting in an immediate engine fire at the rear of engine and can be a serious threat to occupants. …”

NHTSA complaint #10020680, filed 2003-05

“The contact owned a 1993 Jeep Grand Cherokee. While parked, another vehicle crashed into the contact's vehicle. As a result, the vehicle caught on fire. A police and a fire report were filed. The vehicle was destroyed. The contact received a notice for NHTSA campaign number: 13v252000 (fuel system, gasoline, structure) after the failure occurred. The approximate failure mileage was 100,000.”
