NHTSA complaint #10980042, filed 2017-04, 221,798 miles“I have a 2006 Toyota Camry which died when driving to work on friday 6/26/09. I was in a curve at 45 MPH and the steering became very stiff and the engine died and all the warning lights came on. I was trying to pass a cyclist and nearly hit a gravel truck and the cyclist when trying to steer the car off the road and stop it.”
NHTSA complaint #10275724, filed 2009-07, 42,000 miles“When the vehicle was started and placed in reverse the engine accelerated. Not being sure what was going on with the car, I kept substantial pressure on the brake and put transmission into neutral. When I did the engine speed proceeded to run away. I quickly just turned the ignition off. I placed the transmission into park, and restarted the engine, and it ran normally thereafter. There have been numerous times in the past year when the engine surged momentarily when the brake was applied, but it was momentary, and not thought significant. …”
NHTSA complaint #10576820, filed 2014-04, 155,000 miles“2006 Camry xle I-4 transmission fluid changed at 30k miles came out black!! This means the fluid is being burned. Car not abused. Driven in 3rd & 2nd on two days 25 days apart down road to yosemite brake used to keep speed down. Only time I can think of that added stress to transmission. Another time I had to step/floor accelerator on freeway on-ramp up grade to keep fast moving semi-truck from running me over. This is normal operation. Transmission failure at these time could be very dangerous.”
NHTSA complaint #10307284, filed 2010-02, 30,000 miles“I was easing into a parking space in front of a bank and was nearly stopped when my car suddenly surged forward. With a full plate glass window in front of me, I wrenched the steering wheel as fast and as far to the right as possible and don't know how I missed the concrete pillar I then saw immediately in front of me. The next thing I knew I was in the driveway I had just used to enter the parking lot in front of the bank.I then pulled back into the parking space I had just left and got out to figure out what had happened and to see if I had caused any damage. …”
