“2008 Toyota Tundra. While driving at 65 MPH, I had a air induction valve fail all of a sudden which caused my vehicle to suddenly stall into limp mode. I know this part has to do with emissions but how it caused the vehicle to respond when it failed if very dangerous. I was in heavy traffic and this sudden switch to limp mode caused me to basically loose control for a few seconds in bumper to bumper traffic. It was very dangerous as the vehicle suddenly dropped to about 35 MPH with no control . …”
NHTSA complaint #10328154, filed 2010-04, 53,300 miles“I was driving down the road and the truck started to make a loud clicking noise. I was only a few blocks from my house. I went home, the truck wouldn't start again.my 2008 Toyota Tundra had an engine failure at 62000 miles. First they said $23,000 for a new engine. Then after months and many hours on the phone, they took the engine apart to find the problem. The dealer took pictures and sent them to Toyota. They said a valve or valve spring fell through and tore everything up. It needed a new short block and right head ($14,000). …”
NHTSA complaint #10452202, filed 2012-03, 62,000 miles“Emissions valve and related pumps failed causing a significant loss in power. This happened when traveling on the highway in upstate vermont. Suddenly my truck lost significant power, and would rapidly decelarate everytime I approach a positive grade in the road. Several times during the trip I slowed down faster than cars behind me expected, and the brake lights did not warn them as it was due to the truck losing power, and not me braking. In addition due to the location I was at I was unable to locate a dealer for several miles. …”
NHTSA complaint #10413989, filed 2011-07, 45,000 miles“Truck went into limp mode and the vsc, check engine light and the traction light all came on. Took it to autozone to get a read out and it had a p2442 for a subaru, but was figured to be the asv (air switch valve) or the aip (air induction pump) on bank 2. Considering that my truck is out of warranty with 62000 miles and all the forum and websites that I have been to that told me it would cast any where from 1000 to 5000 bucks to fix, I checked it out myself. The asv on the driver side has a metal plate that is broken and is keeping the valve opened. …”
NHTSA complaint #10402661, filed 2011-05, 62,000 miles“My truck was parked for 3 days, then when I started the engine all of the traction control lights started flashing, the check engine light remained on steady, and 4lo light flashed, truck would not travel over 30 MPH and became very sluggish. This has happened three times in one week, and disconnecting battery for a few minutes cleared the problem. Local dealership said the problem is a failed actuator ecu assembly failed communication c1201 . Cost of repair is $2,280.41. Warranty does not cover repair because this part is only covered by the 3 year/36000 mile warranty. …”
