What owners report

Owners of the 2022 F-250 SD most often describe fuel delivery trouble that shows up as a loss of power or a stall, sometimes while towing or merging, and in some cases no restart afterward. Many complaints are filed simply because a recall remedy part was not yet available, and a smaller but steady group covers transmission shifting and lurching behavior and various electrical faults that appear after rain or cold weather.

  1. Fuel system

Loss of power or stalling (low and high pressure fuel pump)

Mentioned in 16 of 60 sampled complaints

Complaints describe the truck hesitating, lurching, or going limp while accelerating, sometimes with a low fuel pressure message, and in several cases stalling outright and needing a restart or a tow. Diesel owners report the same pattern and add that the dealer found a failed high pressure pump, in some cases with metal debris in the fuel system. Several complaints say the pump failed while towing or merging onto a highway, and some were filed by owners who had a recall notice but no remedy parts yet. When the dealer could not duplicate the fault, some owners were told to keep driving. Spread across the sample from roughly 20,000 to 80,000 miles, with several reports at highway speed and while towing.

    Recall 25V455000Recall 24V957000Recall 26V1580003 related service bulletins

What to check: Ask whether either fuel pump recall was completed and whether the pump has ever been replaced; on a diesel, ask whether the fuel system was inspected for debris if the truck has ever stalled.

  2. Transmission and drivetrain

Hard or delayed shifts, lurching, sudden deceleration

    • 16 complaints (13%)
    • median 16,755 mi at 1.3 yrs old (6 state mileage, few)
    • 1 mention a crash, fire or injury
    • filed 2022–2026

Owners describe loud clunks when shifting into drive or reverse and while moving, lurching forward when coming to a stop, and occasional episodes where the truck skips gears or drops power for a few seconds before engaging again. A few complaints note the transmission went into a fault state and abruptly decelerated at highway speed, recovering after a key cycle. Dealers often reported the transmission was operating normally and could not duplicate the concern. Mostly reported well under 30,000 miles, with some complaints filed within the first few thousand miles and a few near 50,000.

    Recall 22V0870007 related service bulletins

What to check: Drive it from a cold start through stop-and-go and a highway merge, and ask whether any transmission software update or clutch circuit leak test was performed.

    • median 18,357 mi at 0.7 yrs old (2 state mileage, few)
    • 1 mention a crash, fire or injury
    • filed 2022–2026

Complaints describe intermittent loss of power windows, locks, radio, climate control, turn signals and headlights, sometimes with the engine failing to shut off when the key is removed. Several owners link the onset to rain or very cold days and report repeated dealer visits without a confirmed diagnosis. Separate complaints describe steering wheel controls and the horn cutting out, with a clock spring replaced and the symptom returning. Reported from near-new vehicles to about 11,000 miles, often in wet or cold conditions.

    • median 51,500 mi at 3.5 yrs old (6 state mileage, few)
    • 1 mention a crash, fire or injury
    • filed 2022–2026

A number of complaints were filed only to note that a recall notice arrived but the remedy part was not available, with owners saying the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable time for the repair. Some owners say they were reluctant to drive the truck or were given appointment dates months out. These complaints do not describe a new failure in most cases, though a few owners report a failure that matches the recall description. Filed from 2025 into 2026, on vehicles at varying mileage, including trucks around 30,000 to 53,000 miles that had already stalled.

This is my only vehicle to get to work besides my wife's car, but she needs hers to get to work as she is in the medical field. There wasn't any warning, I was driving west into the sun when I tried to clean my windshield by activating the windshield wiper spray and the wipers never came on. Buying note. The 2022 F-250 SD has several open campaigns including fuel pump, wiper arm and trailer brake software recalls, so start by pulling the full recall history for the specific VIN and confirming which repairs were actually done. A cold-start test drive through stop-and-go and a highway merge, plus a check of the wipers and trailer wiring, will surface most of what owners write about.

Summary written with AI from a sample of 60 NHTSA complaints for this model year (picked at random, with complaints that state a mileage and recent ones taken first), then checked automatically against the source records. Where a problem shows a complaint count, every complaint for this model year was matched with fixed keyword rules (written with AI and tested against the sample), and the mileage, age and repair figures are calculated from those complaints; owners' figures are as stated, not verified. Other counts refer to the sample. The excerpts come from NHTSA's public complaint records and are unverified; capitalisation is normalised, NHTSA staff notes are removed, and shortened text ends with “…”. Something wrong? Example complaints

Fuel system: “My vehicle has been at Ford of Harvey since 8/31/26. Dealer replaced ignition coil 8/18/26. Light and rough idle returned and the dealer determined a new engine would be needed. Dealer says Ford warranty only wants to replace cam shaft. Metal in oil was found and dealer has fought corporate warranty for over a month, ripping apart my engine. The fear is engine could seize at highway speeds as a result of internal damage.caused by circulating debris. Truck still sits at dealer.”

NHTSA complaint #11773738, filed 2026-10

Transmission and drivetrain: “My truck since new would not go into drive or reverse sometimes it's under warranty, I took it to the ford dealer and they were able see the problem but stated in writing that nothing needs to be done just wait for it to engage the gear when I'm ready to drive the truck. Please help me if possible. Thank you”

NHTSA complaint #11605961, filed 2024-08

Electrical system: “While my truck was under warranty, I reported intermittent failure of the front passenger door lock not functioning. Because it was intermittent, the dealership said since they couldn't replicate the issue they would not try to fix the issue. Now that I am out of warranty, the lock has failed completely and the front passenger door does not automatically lock when I am driving. The safety issue is that it will not lock or unlock automatically when it should. All other door locks work properly. Ford has refused to fix this as if it were still under warranty.”

NHTSA complaint #11667124, filed 2025-06

Engine: “The failed component is a lifter/camshaft. Luckily I was attentive to my vehicle and noticed a ticking noise within the engine and took it to a dealer for diagnosis. An engine failure while traveling at highway speeds could be a disastrous to occupants and others around them. This appears to be a common problem with the 7.3l engine. The check engine light illuminated after i noticed the ticking noise.”
