Example complaints

Selected from NHTSA records; personal details are removed. They are consumer reports, not findings.

“Trailer brakes on my ram worked great on my rv trailer. Just traded it in on this truck and no trailer brakes. Message comes up saying brake controller fault. It's hard to stop a 8000# trailer in a emergecncy stopping situation. Local dealer checked my truck and couldn't say for sure what the problem is. They thought it was the brake module but they where on back order and I would be number 61 to get one. Certain year and model as mine are on recall but mine is not. I did a lot of reserch and Ford defintely has a problem with trailer brake controllers.”

NHTSA complaint #11613597, filed 2024-09

“Trailer wiring fault is the warning message on my information display on my Ford F-250 Super Duty Truck. The warning message appears when I have a trailer attached to my truck. When applying the brakes, the trailer brakes go on and off causing the truck to jerk wildly. The 5th wheel trailer has been in the shop 3 different times trying to find a problem with the trailer but have not found any braking problems since they pulled the trailer with another truck and had no braking issues. Ford dealers have seen the vehicle twice now and say they plugged in an instrument and do not see any problems. …”

NHTSA complaint #11510644, filed 2023-03

“Trailer brake system malfunction causing truck to lose trailer braking abilities. Instrument panel showing trailer disconnected message. Issue happens with all trailers connected to 7 pin connector, including fifth wheel.”

NHTSA complaint #11728827, filed 2026-04

“The truck has 66,500 miles. One of our employees was driving and had the harmonic balancer bolt back out and harmonic balancer fell off. Truck has been sent to Midway Ford in Roseville, MN for repair.”
