“I have a 2005 Expedition eddie bauer and the lift gate will open on occasion. The dealer cannot find anything wrong to cause this but is aware of other complaints. I bought the vehicle brand new and started to encounter this problem at 37,000 miles when the warranty ran out. I am afraid this will happen while I am transporting my dogs to a dog show and their crates will be thrown out of the rear onto the highway.”

NHTSA complaint #10277089, filed 2009-07, 37,000 miles

“The paint is bubbling and peeling on the hood and rear lift gate. This problem started and keeps getting worse. The paint has already came off in a 1 inch section. I could send I a piece of the paint to a lab if needed. Car was never in accident of re-painted.”

NHTSA complaint #10280309, filed 2009-08, 38,000 miles

“Ford Expedition paint. I purchased a new 2005 Ford Expedition eddie bauer edition in 5/2005 from a car dealer. The 36000/3 year warranty has expired and the paint is blistering on the tailgate. I called dealer and they said it is a manufacturing defect and they will not pay for it but it will do no good to fix it unless the entire tailgate is replaced with steel. There is a service bulletin out on this issue and they are not standing behind it.”

NHTSA complaint #10232174, filed 2008-06, 43,000 miles

“2005 Ford Expedition, paint cracking and peeling on the roof. Of course I did not notice it till 102,000 miles. I did take it to the dealer and they basically told me that Ford would not have fixed it 100% anyway. They do a one-third (Ford), one-third (dealer), one-third (customer) pays. I find this very unacceptable. You buy a $60+++ vehicle and the paint holds no guarantee. I guess I'm luckier than the other guy though, you really don't notice the roof. The dealer said it would be about a $1500 repaint. …”

NHTSA complaint #10284085, filed 2009-09, 102,000 miles

“Aluminum body panels are corroding underneath the paint, causing bubbling, flaking, and chipping of the paint. This is not caused naturally, this is a failure on the part of Ford and their quality control. The aluminum underneath was contaminated from the factory with iron causing corrosion. While knowing about this problem, they failed to issue a recall.”
