“My service shifter message has been staying on. When it first started giving the message it would go off when I cut the vehicle off and I wouldn't get the message again for a while but now it is staying on. I've also been having issues with the transmission shifting really hard sometimes but only when I get the service shifter message.”

NHTSA complaint #11353645, filed 2020-09, 89,575 miles

“This first started back in september 2019 turned the car on and the 'service shift' light came on. Followed by the check air bags. I turned it off and back on again, and it was gone.then about a week later, the same thing happened - then a few days after that, my engine light came on. Also happend while I was driving down the freeway.”

NHTSA complaint #11297851, filed 2020-01, 55,000 miles

“All of a sudden service shifter come on screen with the shifter lights all illuminated red. I took it to the dealership and this morning they informed me that the wires in the gearshift and a plastic piece have to be replaced. Because this happened at 38,103 miles it is not covered by warranty anymore, had it happened under 36,000 miles it would have been covered”

NHTSA complaint #11354888, filed 2020-09, 38,103 miles

“When I first purchased my vehicle at 50,000 miles the service shifter came on, we got it fixed no problem. Now I am at 56,000 miles and the service shifter has now come back on. I have read hundreds to thousands of complaints about this problem with Jeep cherokees and something needs to be done about it. Please recall Jeep cherokees.”

NHTSA complaint #11207864, filed 2019-05, 56,000 miles

“This is the 2nd time my service shifter has come on the screen and the prnd lights all turned red. The car was driving normal and I was in a parking lot doing about 15mph. The 1st time I had just come to a red light just after leaving my home which I quickly returned. I have read about people having this issue and the car suddenly shutting down. It's very scary when this comes on.”
