“When refueling my Jeep has always belched gasoline back out of the fuel filler neck when the gas pump automatically shuts off when the tank gets full. This could easily cause a disaster & my wife is afraid to put fuel in it. I thought that mine was the only one to do this, but talking with other owners, I have discovered that all similar jeeps have the same dangerous defect.”
NHTSA complaint #11154402, filed 2018-11, 3,300 miles“Everytime, while filling my tank fuel will spill out as the auto shut off engages on the pump. Fuel will spill out onto the ground, my clothes, my hands and the side of my Jeep. I am not attempting to top off my tank when the issue occurs, it happens every time I fill my tank however I hold the handle when the auto shut off engages.”
NHTSA complaint #10743934, filed 2015-07, 102,700 miles“Gas tank overflow. Anytime I fill my tank, a large amount of gasoline shoots back out of the tank, dripping down the side of my car, and often splashing me or gas attendant. Not only is this dangerous, it is also damaging the plastic and paint on my car, as well as wasting gas.”
NHTSA complaint #11065387, filed 2018-01, 100,000 miles“Just purchased this used Jeep Wrangler unlimited rubicon about 2 1/2 months ago and everytime I fill the gas tank, fuel pukes back out the filler opening and runs down the side all over the ground before the gas pump can shut off. Seems really dangerous not to mention making a big, embarrassing mess. It does not matter where I refuel, happens at all gas stations.”
NHTSA complaint #10667836, filed 2014-12, 66,000 miles“When I fill up my tank at the gas station, the auto fill won't click off until the gas tank is overfilled, and sprays out, then runs down the side of my Jeep. It doesn't matter if I use their auto fill notches and walk away or hold it by hand, the gas wont click off until the tank has overflowed. It spills between a liter and a pint each time.”
