“I was driving in the rain going the speed limit. My Jeep hit a pool of water on the surface of the highway and started to skid and hydroploane. The next thing I knew it was flipping over and landed on the shoulder of the highway. I was lucky to be wearing my seat belt. I was suspended upside down by my seatbelt. I was able to unbuckle it and crawl out the drivers side window which was completely blown out. Seconds after I got out of the car it burst into flames and the entire vehicle was engulfed and burned completely inside and out. There was nothing left of it but burnt frame. …”

NHTSA complaint #10495134, filed 2013-01, 142,000 miles

“We have a 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee limited 4wd. Above each passenger door there is a handle to hold on to. I don't know what it would be called but I use it to hang on when we go around a corner, etc. In june we were just leaving the cleaners. My husband was driving and I was in the passenger seat. I reached up for the handle as he was backing out. All of the sudden something hit my nose right under my eye. It really smarted and left a red welt. I asked him to re-park the car and we looked for what in the world had happened. We found a small piece of steel on the seat. …”

NHTSA complaint #10080958, filed 2004-07, 24,126 miles

“The suvs resistor-blower motor, which is part of the A/C, heater and blower system, failed. Lithia Jeep service representatives, who diagnosed and repaired the unit, indicated its placement is too close to a major heat source in the car; the excessive heat has caused the unit to fail early. The service rep indicated that while the unit failed before the third anniversary of the vehicle, which was new when purchased, the miles were beyond the warranty level. …”

NHTSA complaint #10096309, filed 2004-10, 57,000 miles

“The engine revved at a very high rpms when starting. When changing gears it made a loud clung sound and wanted to lunge into that direction. The vehicle has never shifted properly between gears. It was almost like it was slipping, and then finding the right gear. It was not a smooth transmission either. Since I purchased the vehicle a little over 1-1/2 years ago the car has been in the shop more than 15 times. The dealers could not find the cause of the problem. I had to replace a transmission sensor, 02 sensor, sun roof, rear end, and cd player. …”

NHTSA complaint #10191054, filed 2007-05

“The contact owns a 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact stated that the fuel tank gathered rust and corrosion. Also, the undercarriage was corroded and pieces were falling off. The contact believed that the fuel tank cover may have fallen off and it was wet; however, the contact was unsure. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The dealer and manufacturer were not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 80,000.”
